I have an Apple AND Sonos household, had no trouble with the new app but hardly ever use it anyway... because the very same OLD Mac app is still available and I otherwise toss everything to Sonos via Apple apps... particularly Apple Music. I've also helped friends set up new Sonos setups since the new app hit and/or add speakers to existing systems and had no problems with theirs either. So experiences seem to vary- like they do with Apple app evolutionary changes, when Apple decides a major overhaul is necessary.

I never get to comment on these Sonos posts since I had never owned one, but I bought the Arc Ultra to go with the 77" LG C3 OLED that I got on sale for $1499 the other week for starting my home theater build in the basement, and it is amazing. I'm not really an audiophile but my ear is good enough that I can tell that it's a top quality soundbar. I can hear things in songs that I never even noticed before. It's wild. And in movies it does a really good job of bouncing around the sound to make it seem more like surround sound. I like that it is modular so I can add a couple rears someday if I want to.

I was kind of hesitant to get it since I've heard people here complaining about the app, but for its use as a soundbar, I haven't really had much use for the app beyond the initial setup and tweaking a few settings for voice dialog and such. But in the reviews of the Ultra that I read, they said that since it's new, it was built from the ground up to work with the new app so that might be it? None of the reviews I saw mentioned it having issues with the app. So for that reason I might wait for them to come out with new rear surround speakers. Didn't get a woofer because those irritate my wife, and the Ultra already has a pretty good one built in with that brand new speaker tech from Europe or whatever that makes it a lot bigger.

Pair that thing with twin 300s for true "surround" sound (the real thing, where audio meant to come from "back there" actually comes from back there). Then, you'll have left front, right and center in that ARC and surround left & right in those 300s. That system "fakes" ATMOS with up-firing speakers and it is a good illusion vs. actually putting speakers overhead... much better than having only 2 speakers up front faking "center, surround and overhead speakers" by claiming ATMOS. Our ears can definitely hear the difference from where sound originates.

And tip: instead of overpaying for stands if you need them, well-rated clones sold on Amazon for much less seem just as good. Since the new app hit, I've helped 2 friends add 300s like this and they LOVE the overall sound of it all. I'm an AV stickler and would always argue for Receiver + quality "dumb" speakers over any of the "smart" options but even I was impressed with how well Arc + twin 300s sound as a system.

Later still, they added the bass module too as both liked even deeper bass, though I didn't really believe they needed it as Arc does quite well with bass on its own. But they had no problem adding it with the new app and now they enjoy the low rumbles, explosions, thunder, etc that come from a dedicated sub... another option not available to any of the HPs-or-bust fans.

Don't let this crowd's biases fool you. Start a thread with a picture of any Apple competitor's "anything" and 'we' tear into it like it's toxic poison. Yes, when the completely-overhauled app was first released, some people were having issues. Others were not. Since then- which has been months now- the app has had many updates but 'we' hate on it anyway. I believe people when they say they are still having problems with it... through I'm not myself. I just don't believe that everyone is having problems as I'm not myself... nor are those friends. Once I adapted to the new app, I found I like it much better as it let me bring the stuff most important to me right to the front page vs. digging up and down through sometimes 3 or 4 clicks to accomplish the same in the old app. But to each his own.

Those genuinely affected that are Mac people can still use the old Sonos App on Mac (as an easy workaround) as well as never bother using the Sonos App at all because they can "throw" Apple Music to Sonos directly from Apple's app and stuff like your Arc setup are controlled by your TV or the AppleTV remote via ARC instead of needing the Sonos App (old or new).

This crowd sees Sonos as an Apple competitor, so 'we' would rather push heavily walled garden, stereo sound in 2 HPs vs. all of the many "open" home theater setup options from a company focused only on speakers. So 'we' rip away at it... like Spotify is junk (too)... and Google Maps... and all things Epic Games, the entire EU and lately whole other countries who dare to cross Apple, etc.

You have what may be the very best soundbar available. Enjoy it.

The new app is still garbage. Glad you don’t have issues. I consider Sonos complimentary to apple so my anger at Sonos isn’t as an apple fanboy.

Again, I have no problems with the app, nor do friends who have added Sonos since the new app came out. Sorry you are experiencing "garbage." While they continue to revive some features that existed in the old app and work on bug fixes, etc, I suggest using the same old Mac Sonos App and/or tossing anything you want to your speakers from Apple Music apps, AppleTV control center, etc. (never needing to touch the Sonos App at all).

Other than when I want to listen to Sonos' own radio stations, I enjoy the bulk of my use of them without ever opening the "garbage" at all. I presume most others could too by doing what we Apple people do all the time when Apple makes changes we don't like: workaround solutions.

I fully agree that Sonos could- and SHOULD- have baked this app much further before rolling it out- and I suspect the pain they've felt has reminded them of that too- but I could argue the same about macOS/iOS/etc... which has me awaiting the .4 or .5 update EVERY TIME before chancing the upgrade. Sometimes it's still quite the chore to just find where Settings functionality is now located in reworked Settings (reworked for no obvious reason). Etc.

Sonos’ app faux pax was horrible. But even after all that their software is still years ahead of anyone else in this space.

Think you mean hardware. Their software has never been years ahead.

you don’t have to believe me look at the App Store reviews for the Sonos app versus any other premium audio manufacturer, and you will see that Sonos makes the best software.

Agree — Sonos is the best of all fools.

The new app is garbage and has been for months

1. I can't even add songs to my Sonos playlists after all this

2. Now instead of info being sent locally on the app everything you do connects to the cloud which means not only are they data mining way more than you realize but they are also prepping all users for a monthly subscription model which is the only reason they did the unnecessary change to the infrastructure...just wait for the shi storm with that!

I'll second that. I have Arc + 300s + Sub in my living room, and it sounds great. I never have to touch the app. When I do play music, I almost always do it via Airplay from a phone.

Anyone have thoughts on the Era 100 vs the Ikea Symfonisk speakers? I use the Ikea's for the rears (with a Beam Gen 2) and they sound great, but I'm willing to upgrade if it's worth it. We have a large room with high ceilings so true Atmos is not really possible, for better or worse.

If you are happy with what you have, ‘love the one you're with.’

But if you are itching to replace with Sonos, the 300s are their best… and I saw some in their refurb store last time I looked.

For a large room, go 300s and have an eye towards turning beam into an Arc in the future, maybe moving beam to another smaller room.

I suppose I don't use enough of the app to notice any real differences anyway. I only use it to set things up, run Truplay, and configure a few sound options. I don't use the remote feature nor the music features built in, so if there's something missing, I don't use it. Sonos does say that in the next couple of months, all the old missing stuff will make it into the app. I can see why people are upset. I guess I'm just lucky I have no interest in those missing features because what I use it for, the app works fine.

I actually replaced a pair of OG HomePods for my bedroom Apple TV with a Beam 2, which I have to say is a lot better than the HomePods, though I haven't heard the second generation. But regardless of that, I picked up a pair of Era 100's for the rear surrounds, too. For a bedroom, the 100's are just fine. I don't need the Era 300's. You can't add rear surrounds with the HomePod pair, so even if the main soundbar wasn't a decent improvement, I probably would have gotten it anyway. One advantage of the Beam 2 is that dialogue enhancement works for all audio sources while the Apple TV's version is limited to those apps that take advantage of it.

I was really hoping they'd put the Arc Ultra on sale for Black Friday, but I see it still isn't discounted then or now. I guess they think it's still too new. I was hoping to replace the old Samsung soundbar that I have in my family room that's attached to a really big TCL 98" TV. That Samsung will survive another year, I guess.

I think Sonos hired Apple people to package their gear. If it didn't have Sonos splashed on the boxes, you'd think they were boxes Apple designed. They do have excellent packaging.

Curious how all the Sonos defenders are writing paragraph responses.

Yeah, the app is crap. It will keep on randomly connecting to the TV sound bar in the basement instead of my speaker in the kitchen. Searching for songs is pretty spotty as well.

But they do sound good.

I never thought i’d see the day but even on my network that has never had problems with Sonos staying connected, speakers are constantly losing connection.

When these things give up I’m not buying Sonos again. The company has lost the game.

I have a sonos household but I won't give them another dime. All these months later and the app still doesn't follow directions. It's terrible. I hope Apple fills the gap.
I don't know...Apple, the same company that let Siri languish for almost two decades? I'm not fond of that idea.

I don't know...I'm trying to ELIMINATE the whole "reflective sound" thing from my house. It's already too hard to set up my Bose speakers from 20 and 30 years ago. Why would I want to make it MORE difficult by buying even more reflective sound devices?

You're not wrong! People hate the iPhone for this or that, or they hate the iPad for this or that or the other.

But put a competitor's product in front of us, and man, the fangs and claws come out!

I generally prefer to write in paragraphs.

And interestingly enough, I rarely have problems with my Sonos system. I wonder why that is?

On occasion, my Apple Podcasts app won't play to the Port in the living room through airplay. But the Sonos App always does. And if ever one or more of the devices won't connect, it might need to have the network rebooted.
But they do sound good.
They do, even with only one speaker in a room.

Would love to have a app store that would offer old versions of apps.
