Sonos today launched two new speakers, the Sonos Play and the Sonos Era 100 SL. Sonos says that the additions to its lineup "reflect a renewed focus on strengthening the Sonos system" after a disastrous 2024 app redesign damaged customer trust.

The Sonos Play is a versatile speaker that can be used from room to room, and like most Sonos products, multiple speakers can be paired together. Sonos Play speakers connect to WiFi and can be grouped across multiple rooms or paired up for stereo sound.

There's an included charging base so the speaker can be used either at home or while on the go. The battery lasts for up to 24 hours, and it can also serve as a power bank for recharging an iPhone. The Sonos Play has IP67 waterproofing so it can be used poolside, at the beach, or in the shower.

When you're not at home, up to four Sonos Play or Move 2 speakers can be paired together over Bluetooth instead of WiFi using the Sonos Play app. Sound will be synced up, and Automatic Trueplay will adapt the audio to match the environment.

AirPlay 2 support is included, so Sonos Play speakers can be used alongside other AirPlay 2 speakers for multi-room or multi-device audio using Apple's technology.

The Era 100 SL is a simpler speaker that's meant to ease people into the Sonos ecosystem. It features a microphone-free design and fewer features to help keep the price lower. It can be used alone or paired with other Sonos speakers over time, and it also supports AirPlay 2.

The Sonos Play and Sonos Era 100 SL can be pre-ordered from the Sonos website starting today, with a launch to follow on March 31, 2026. The Sonos Play is $299, while the Sonos Era 100 SL is $189.

After years of broken iTunes library connections and a painful amount of lost time trying to fix things there is nothing that could restore interest or trust in the Sonos brand.

Why keep adding speakers to a broken system that doesn’t get fixed?

Airplay2 is horrendous on Sonos speakers--they shouldn't be able to advertise they support it without some sort of disclaimer. I don't know if I should really blame Apple instead of Sonos, but I've decided Sonos deserves it. 50% of the time my phone shows I'm connected but there is zero sound coming from the Sonos (OneSL or Era100, doesn't matter). I have to open the Sonos app, play some random thing from the app, stop playing the random thing. And then it will decide to play the Airplay item next time I try...

Just a small note please 🙂 When that battery goes - the whole speaker most likely goes with or without a power adapter ? If even remotely a chance ; a pass . This happened to all the beats pill products.... If I am wrong then totally wasn't meant to be negative ....... with best wishes

I have 3 rooms in my house with a Sonos setup. One of them is using Airplay directly from an Apple TV. It works about 95% of the time without an issue. The other 5% I just need to reset the airplay target in the Apple TV. I feel like Airplay is sometimes hit or miss based on the WiFi signal but I can't prove it. But I still have no issues recommending Sonos...they sound great and I love the sound signature.

Sonos causes havoc with Unifi wifi, which I wish I knew before hours of weird network errors. It seems this is still the case so Sonos is basically a no-go for me and a do not recommend to friends. And the app drama... well let’s not rub that in again.
Are you running different vlans by any chance, I had issues with Sonos on different vlan to iPhones. Solved by firewall rules between vlans.

The Sonos haters on this website are savage. They make great sounding speakers. The app debacle has passed and works just fine now.
I'm going to have to strongly disagree on your point about the app debacle; that is very much still an ongoing issue.

I have a Sonos Play:1 and a Sonos Roam, which I haven't been able to use in over a year now. I just asked Google if they are both supposed to be compatible with the latest Sonos app, (that is to say, the app formerly known as "S2") and it verified that they are. Taking note of your assertion that it "works just fine now," I went ahead and attempted (for the umpteenth time) to connect the Roam to the app, and it failed while attempting to update the firmware -- error 1014. I then attempted to connect the Play:1 to the app, and it failed immediately, without preamble, without explanation and without error code.

So sure... the Sonos concept is "nice"... When. It. Works. The trouble is, it fails far more often than it should, and everybody's story about how it failed them is different.

I have a pair of Sonos Era 100s, a pair of Era 300s and a Sonos 1 along with a couple of Sonos Roams. They have always worked fine for me and they can work with either BT or, via a dongle for the Era 100s and Era 300s, directly with an analogue input (something Apples HomePods still cannot do). However Airplay is a disaster at the moment. It drops out, stops playing and the Mac OS Apple Music app is a disaster (it looses Airplay configurations on a regular basis). I also have 9 HomePods (7 original and 2 new generation) and they have as much trouble with Airplay as the Sonos system. In fact I often use the Sonos app and its direct streaming of Apple Music to play music when my HomePods and Airplay have packed up.

I am glad that Sonos understand the need for higher quality playback of music from these stand alone speakers and continue to invest in new products, unlike Apple who seem to have given up and seem intent on pursuing the very low quality cheap speaker market. I love my HomePods but they seem to be being abandoned by Apple and their AirPlay only interface is a serious problem. So thank you Sonos for continuing to support better quality speakers.

My Sonos works just fine with my Unify wifi. I know people complain about the sonos app and issues that are still present. I have 12 Sonos speakers of various models and years throughout my home and they all work with the app just fine. I use the system every day to play music or run the audio output from the tv. I am not happy about some aspects of the app (lack of customization being one) but the functionality is not one. I have Apple home pods at work and I hate using them. I leave the room and go out of range and when I return I need to reconnect and restart the music.

I think they’re pretty good for wireless surround sound (if you’re willing to pay the high price). But the good portable speakers are too big, and the high end indoor speakers are too expensive.

When are they allowing me to control my iPhones music from the lock screen? Until then it’s borderline useless on a phone.

I used to love Sonos but not willing to invest in a speaker system with their EOL approach, poor software, lacking features and premium pricing when they are no longer industry leaders. And to put the cherry on top, BlackRock are their biggest investor.

I’ll never give this company any more money. My Move 2 is a complete joke. It sounds good… if I can actually get anything to play out of it. Have to connect my iPhone to it like 3 times before it plays the Spotify track and usually plays complete silence until I restart the track several times.

The only thing it’s reliable for is Bluetooth connection from my bedroom TV. Everything else is a joke.

I had an UltimateEars Megaboom (or Megablast… whichever the bigger one was) but it sadly got crushed. I miss it. It never missed a beat. It was such a better speaker than this trash. Wish I’d bought another instead.

Sonos? Never again.

I’ve never met someone who’s been able to use their Sonos without issues. In fact, even going to someone’s house- they’re barely able to use any of the functions of, say Spotify- invite someone to your jam, make a playlist you can share, play someone else’s Spotify playlist etc. -My colleague can’t do any of that stuff.

Spending so much money on something so proprietary that won’t let you use its native feature set is just not worth it. I don’t understand the appeal. Just seems like these are for people with a lot of $ that don’t know anything about technology.

I’ve yet to stream anything to mine from the Sonos app, new or old (it sucked then too). AirPlay 2 is the only thing we use. I just wish it supported making defined groups that you could save. You can use shortcuts to send music to a group but it’s definitely not ideal to have to do that every time.

Also, I don’t want to sound like that guy but if you’re having issues with your Sonos system in AirPlay 2 it’s your network. I’ve literally never not had it work … it’s rock solid over my eero system.

Why wouldn’t you stream through the Sonos App. If you don’t stream through the app, you won’t get Hi-Res audio out of the speakers. The app is kind of annoying and the interface isn’t as good as other music apps but it is serviceable.
