michael and amy probably asked 1 fundamental question:
do we need another movie about steve jobs?

the answer is in turnaround.

you all would be surprised how many well known movies changed hands between directors, studios and even writers before they were done.
Happens all the time.

On the other hand some movies, like Jodorowsky's Dune never got made. And we are poorer for it.

Why doesn't Disney/Pixar do it?

Just animate the damn thing and forget the actor drama!

Most American audiences have trouble with the idea of "adult animation" unless it's some prime-time cartoon like Family Guy. This is why anime has such a niche audience over here.

They wouldn't be able to see the movie as a serious drama if it wasn't acted by real people.

Another reason maybe that Sony was getting offers from several studios with Universal leading the charge. Sony sees it can make money without making the film and makes it available to the the highest bidder.

Was thinking the same thing. With all the director and cast changes it seems like Sony wasn't 100% on board with the project. Could all just be over disagreements with the production team over money/casting decisions as well.

I really hope this will lead to David Fincher being reinstated as the director of this film. As "The Social Network" shows, David Fincher and Aaron Sorkin make a wonderfully synergistic duo.

Sony's clueless handling of this film reminds me of Tim Cook's clueless handling of Apple. :D

That's not a bad idea. Christian Bale going on boardroom rants about the failures, mis-steps, and controversies would be highly entertaining. Let's throw .Mac/Mobile Me, Antennagate, Ping, and Flash on the iPhone in there as well.

and Kevin Bacon as Scott Forstall

It's most likely Sony has lost faith in the project because of all this stalling.

Hell, they're still in pre-production, so production hasn't even started.

The stalling that rumors point to Sony wanting production to begin LATER than planned?

I love Aaron Sorkin but it seems like this movie isn't meant to be, so far everything points to this ending up average at best, if actors and even studios are not having much faith in it...

The two entities that share 2/3rd the blame for every crappy movie ever made.

Bale pulling out doesn't surprise me. He doesn't make sense for the role. He wants to be his characters and I think he could not find a way to be Steve Jobs. Perhaps that task becomes more difficult with a real iconic person who just recently passed. Fictional characters or historical characters allow for much more breathing room in terms of developing a character.

That being said I don't see Fasbender either.

This movie is turning into an infamous Steve Jobs rant where he fires everyone in a rage because they are no longer insanely great enough! :D

The script must suck bad. Plain and simple.

Hollywood studios don't give up on projects with a high profile just because the script sucks. There is almost zero chance for that being the reason. It is more likely continued disagreements about fundamental issues between the studio the producers/writer/director.

Does not sound like the two sides were ever on the same page in terms of what they wanted to make. It is incredibly rare for a project like this to be put in turn around. I think the producers drew a line in the sand and forced sony's hand.

Bale was perfect for the role. Him bailing is the reason SONY is bailing.

OBVIOUSLY IT'S A BAD SCRIPT! LOL

It's great to have films that examine the lives of people who were successful and impactful, both professionally and personally. But just as much can be learned by seeing a film about somebody who was very successful professionally, but very troubled in their personal life.

We're able to learn through more than just seeing positivity in stories. There's much to learn through darkness, despair and failure. A good Steve Jobs film will cause the viewer to come away asking whether he really was a good man (because of family issues), and then the viewer will ask the same question of themselves, and push themselves to be better.

The fact is that conflict makes for a good story. A successful business man with a happy, normal family life is likely going to make for a pretty boring movie.

I think it makes no sense to develop a movie about the late CEO of a competing company.

In other words, look forward to the biopic that will probably be called Kutaragi.

Well production can't start if there is no lead...

Having been a Sony Pictures employee... the writing is on the wall that this studio is floundering. I expect them to drop Spider-man next.

Well they won't GIVE it back... probably find a way to sell the rights back to Disney though.

I work for Fox Sports 1 now... They laid me off along with 450 other people in 2010.

There was just another round earlier this year... yet somehow they built this giant ugly ass rainbow that cost them 1.2 million dollars in the middle of the studio...

I'm in the biz too and I heard stories about Sony and just how bad things were over there from the last few years. Personally, I'm surprised that the studio managed to survive for as long as it has with them bleeding money everywhere else in the company due to them having their fingers dipped in other industries.

Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't there word that the studio was branching off to become its own entity in order to survive if the parent company ultimately went under?

At this point, Spiderman seems to be the biggest property that's keeping Sony afloat. But it seems that they're going to have to let him swing back to Disney, by selling the rights back of course, if the next movie is as poorly received as the last one.

Also, a million dollar rainbow in the middle of the studio? Tell me this was set dressing that was left behind from a shoot. I'm used to studios exercising a lot more constraint but spending a million bucks on this just to have is something else.

I hope the final products doesn't turn into a musical.

It can't: Apple Corp. would sue! :)

Actually, though, if Trey Parker and Matt Stone ever sign up to tell the true story of how Steve bravely fought against the evil B'ilgat'us - wake me up.

Well, the last one is over 1 year old and no longer supported.

Plus, the new one will be 1mm thinner and 1 gram lighter!

Actually, my guess is that it is a very good script, and that is why the movie still exists. Sorkin's writing is likely the best thing about this movie, and what will elevate it above any other Jobs film.

I hope..

They should get Ashton Kutcher and just pick up where the last movie left off. He was great as Jobs.

1- "Nobody wants to see a film about Jobs".
Yes, just as nobody wants to see a film about Facebook. :)

2- " All these people switching and dropping, the script must suck" ".
Most Hollywood projects go through dozens of actors and directors being considered and dropping off the project for various reasons ranging from schedule conflicts to artistic differences to money issues. All this happens behind closed doors and you never hear about it, and you think the film was made just like that from the first day it was conceived.
The Jobs movie has attracted lots of media attention, and every move has been scrutinized, and that gives people false impressions about the whole process.

Bottom line : the whole "drama" this project is going through is just what an average Hollywood movie goes through. Move over, nothing to see here.

And in 3..2..1 : more "Who wants to see a film about Jobs?" , and "Wow, the script must suck badly !" comments.
