    Hi!
I have a really noobish question here... sorry...I want to purchase Sony E 50mm f/1.8 OSS Lens for Sony QX1 for bokeh.
Is it possible to zoom in, out at all with this lens it's fixed, and how does it focus automatically at the object which is, for example, 1m away, and 5m away, or I have to be at some specific distance?

The 50 MM lens is not a zoom lens, setting focus has nothing to do with zoom. The lens you're looking at,is perfect for portraits,I use one with my nex-7.

A zoom lens will always have two numbers. Like a 24-70mm. As that's it's widest (24mm) and longest (70mm).
The camera controls were you focus.

Bear in mind here that the Sony QX1 has an APS-C sensor, so your 50mm lens will be 75mm equivalent for the images produced.
Are you still going to pair with your iPhone?

    Cheers :)

    Thank you!

Yes, I think so - I want to pair it with the iPhone. Do you think it will be problematic?

P.S. Do I have to be at the specific distance from the object to focus correctly, or there is some min, max range where it focuses correctly?
I just red from specifications that minimal focus distance is 39cm. (?)

Sorry...this is all very new for me...:)

The idea of this camera is new to me too, but pairing with a cell phone should be no problem as that's what it's designed to do.

All lenses have a minimum focus distance; if you get closer than that to the subject the photo will be out of focus, so all you need to do is back off a little and try again.

Might I suggest that if the Sony QX1 comes with the quite capable 16-50mm lens you keep that on for a while until you are used to the whole thing. When I first started out 3 years ago I went through a plethora of lenses in my search for quality (I still do ;) ) and completely lost track of taking pleasurable photos.

    Cheers :)

    Thanks!
Definitely, if the body comes with the 16-50mm, i'll keep it and use for sure :) Im still trying to find a good deal, however...

I was looking at E 18-210mm, but that is too expensive. I do like some macro shots as well ... dont know what is good in this field ... it all costs quite some money as well.

P.S. If 39cm is min focus distance, what is the max?

Maximum is always infinity, as far away as you can see yourself.
A larger lens will make the unit unstable unless you use a tripod = more expense.

    Cheers :)

Can I be devils advocate ?

From the sound of your questions, I am wondering if something like a MK I RX100 would be a better option for you. The QX1 is a bit quirky and I am not sure what it is supposed to do that a decent P&S in the same price range can't. You are sounding like you have a lot to learn before buying eccentric cameras with all due respect.

A version 1 RX100 is a fantastic camera and can likely be had for less than the QX1 - I dont see the point of the QX1 and wonder what the chances are of getting your money back if you sell it. Just seems a bit of a nonsense novelty to me sorry.

Just my opinion. Feel free to ignore me but if you are going down the route of another device to charge, or one that can take interchangeable lenses, then why not an NEX-6 or A5100 or A6000 for example? actual cameras, some with an actual viewfinder? rather than the added faff of bluetooth connections and hoping the next phone software update isnt going to knacker your camera - sony play memories is a ball ache as it is so slow to get updates after android so over the few years I have shot Sony, I have had multiple instances where I have had to wait for them to fix it after an upgrade. Consequently I just dont bother with it anymore.

I dont know, dont let me put you off but I like my toys, most on here will tell you that, and I cannot understand the need that the QX1 meets.

    Thanks!

    Creativity is the answer.

Sure, I have to learn a lot.
I have played around with QX100 for a couple of days, then tested SEL50F18, SEL30M35, SEL55210 at the local store, and it's a day and night, even when randomly trying... Especially bokeh with 50mm...I'd be just bored with QX100.

    P.S. And I don't want a separate camera.

Well, some people call Apple's products a gimmick. ;)

I can let you know what I think of it in a few weeks, so far I tested the qx100 and liked the idea.

Sony lenses will be good in any case, even if I decide to change the camera later, and online reviews tell that this product can do some qualitative work.
