Shortly after its PlayStation Experience 2015 event in San Francisco this weekend, Sony has released a brand new app called PlayStation Messages, which allows PlayStation 4 owners to chat with their friends on the go. While the standard PlayStation app had built-in messaging functionality, it's been split into its own app like how Facebook did with Facebook Messenger.

The app allows PlayStation Network users to send their friends text, voice and picture messages in addition to stickers of PlayStation game characters like Knack and Uncharted's Nathan Drake. The app also allows for group messaging.

The standard PlayStation app was also updated today with the ability to follow verified users and the removal of the messaging functionality.

PlayStation Messages is a universal app that's available in the App Store for free. [Direct Link]

I don't use their messages to often cause sometimes it is slow sending and receiving them. If I do I just use their main app.

Why do companies keep splitting off messages from main apps.

I would have expected an android release first. You know, since Sony branded phones use android. Guess even they know the truth
You beat me to it. I also thought it was funny that they started with iOS first but not really surprising either.
Even funnier would be if they only released it for iOS. :D

I would actually like this if it was iOS exclusive. Well Sony does have a good relationship with Apple in terms of camera hardware

Thank ****!

Finally a better way of messaging other PS users without having to use the buttons and alphabet layout that's worse than AppleTV. Can now do this between game loading!

I personally don't see this replacing any other messaging software platform, but it's much more useful talking to other PS users than the actual PS3/4 itself, which is an archaic layout and program.

People who think this is a replacement for another messaging system and asks who uses this have probably never talked to anyone about a game.

This is not just used to talk to friends, it's used to talk to people who play on PlayStation, talk about games, send a comment about an online game, invite someone to play something with you and find new friends. It works for both friends and people that you just randomly meet online and it shows the message directly on the TV.

As for the split from the original app, I think this is an improvement because the app tried to do too many things and I usually had to wait about a minute before I could start writing a message. This is a lot faster and simpler than before.

I'm ready for a full Apple and Sony partnership!
A Mac Pro with a special PlayStation SSD and the ability to dual boot into Orbis OS.
At $2,500+ it's not like it would compete with the actual PlayStation.
Ability to use PlayStation controllers with the Apple TV.
Apple edition aluminum Dual Shock 4s in space gray, etc...

Yay, guess two things won't happen in the near future:

me downgrading my PS app to the latest version and then installing this one.

Awesome!

Glassed Silver:ios

Didn't that "group media services and govenments cannot decide the name of" use The Playstation Chat?

What's with all the embarrassing/sarcastic 'who cares' comments in here?

If you game a lot on a PS4 and use it's messaging feature this free app gives you a better experience than the vanilla Playstation app, nothing more to it - stop the entitled 'who cares' excuse just because you have no interest in it, that's an attitude you tend to outgrow before your teens.
