Sony today announced that PlayStation 4 owners who want to try out the Apple TV+ service can get an extended three-month free trial on their console. This offer applies only to those who have not previously had an Apple TV+ subscription.

Interested users can download the Apple TV app from the PS4 TV and Video section, and then follow the on-screen instructions. An Apple ID will be required to redeem the deal, as will a PlayStation Network account.

After the trial period, the Apple TV+ subscription plan will renew automatically at $4.99 per month until cancelled. The PlayStation extended trial deal will be available until July 22, 2022.

The trial is limited to those with a PlayStation 4 console, and it is not applicable to those who have the PlayStation 5 because there is a separate six month free trial for PS5 owners.

Yet another symptom of Sony's inability to make enough PS5 consoles. Maybe Tim Cook should take on Sony's top job as a new challenge. Then again, nobody is looking to pay $499 extra for a PlayStation stand or another thousand bucks for a usable amount of SSD storage...

It's weird that Sony is doing this in two separate phases. And as I recall, the trial for PS5 owners was able to be stacked with existing subscriptions, where this one specifically isn't.

Apple bashing aside, Sony's problem with the PS5 isn't yields, it's parts availability and shipping, both of which are impacted worldwide by the pandemic. Apple is much less affected by these shortages because they have a habit of signing contracts way in advance to lock in large swathes of component production. If Apple were to take over Sony, their position wouldn't change significantly - it's not like Tim could suddenly conjure up new production capacity / component availability out of thin air for Sony's benefit, and if he could, he'd do that for Apple first.

It’s not just the pandemic. Doesn’t the crypto bro thing impact the availability of GPU cores across the industry? Or does AMD and NVidia GPU chip output get parsed out to specific markets, without one market stealing materials from another?

They just sent me an email saying I was selected to have the honor of ordering a PS5....honestly at this point, I'll keep finishing up my PS4 games and wait for the updated version of the PS5 with better power, thermal and graphics card.

That would be a mistake, the PS4 games I play on my PS5 all look better and run better than they did on my PS4 Pro, not to mention the thing is whisper quiet.

I hardly used Apple TV+ the last time I got it for free. Will definitely try this again so I can at least finish that Tom Hanks movie!
Edit: "This offer applies only to those who have not previously had an Apple TV+ subscription." Oh darn.
Edit 2: I have more than one Apple ID. I'm back in business, baby!

Yeah I want to see how far I can enjoy my PS4 too. PS4 and Switch are working for me right now. Just gotta get through the first release wave of FOMO on new consoles.

I mean not so wow, how easy is it to get a Xbox Series X or a Nvidia 3700/3800/3900 right now? Def not an issue unique to Sony.
No clue. Not a gamer.

Not that you could know - but I guess my wowing was coming more from the perspective of an Apple-user. Can you imagine these forums if, after their Sept. keynote, no one could get an iPhone 14 for over a year?!? I'm pretty sure Arn would have to take the site down, indefinitely. ?

Since I'm not in the gaming community: are they beside themselves with the delays or is that part of the scene? Apple wouldn't be in business if they didn't ship iPhones for over a year. But I guess Sony does make more than just gaming systems. Maybe that's how they're still kicking? Or, how is it Apple has managed to ride through the same supply shortages and shipping issues as well as they have? Pretty wild.

Apple isn’t competing for the same parts, for example Sony and Microsoft get their GPUs and CPUs from AMD who are also producing GPUs for PC graphic cards. Meanwhile Apple is producing their own CPU and GPU on a chip solution solution with M1, A series, etc.

Ah, makes sense. Still, how on Earth do PS fans tolerate a year plus delay. Bonkers I tell ya! ?

Apple is having some of the same issues. At work, we’re STILL waiting to get our maxxed out 16” M1 MBPs. We’ve been waiting for 6 months…

I only decided to get a PS5 a month ago - but I’ve already gotten close a couple of times. I expect to have one by the end of this month.

In general: everything is constrained right now. We all just need to be patient as things ramp back up.

Heh.. the wait for a new car has been 3 to 6 months in some circles!

I'd think that it's apple deciding and paying for this

I thought my 1-month wait on my mini 6 was a lot... Had no idea the 16" M1 MBPs were seeing that kind of delay. Wowzers! ?‍?

Given that Apple has to make upwards of half a million phones a day, every day, they get secure contracts for huge numbers of chips and other components a very long time in advance (years, in some cases, I think). Most other companies don't do that. Sony would be so much happier if they could get as many PS5s assembled and shipped as they have demand for. Still, Google suggests there's around 17 million of them out there already. Then again, it appears Apple ships more iPhones than that in the average month.
