I interpreted it to mean they are rolling out the update to the X900H first and then to the rest of their TVs. If you look on the compatible TV list linked within the article you’ll see all the compatible TVs. The X900F is not among them.

Ah, okay I see the list now. Thanks.
I guess I'm going the AppleTV then...or a cheap Roku stick.

Guess this is good for people who don't have an Apple TV device but I don't know anyone would use this over an Apple TV if you had the choice. My Sony OLED looks great but the user interface is slow and clunky so we never use it.
Because ONE AppleTV device doesn't cover every TV in the house, and for many it's simply cheaper to use a basic Roku for $30 for the other sub-TV's in the house rather than buying an AppleTV for every TV in the house.

I have a 2019 Sony TV and an Apple box. No way I'm putting that Android-based TV on my network.

I know. How could a $179 price tag on a streaming device possibly be a turnoff???

I have a 65" LG B7 OLED, which has every streaming service out there... except Apple TV. Apparently a 2017 OLED TV is too old school for Apple to care about. An odd choice, and not a sentiment shared by Netflix, Amazon, Disney, or dozens of other providers.

How does the Apple TV handle OLED displays? Are there automatic screensavers and whatnot to prevent burn-in?

Oh yes. A screensaver video (there are several) kicks in after a few minutes or so. Despite that, I still have some mild burn in from the Apple TV home screen on my OLED. It's not bad, and is barely noticeable, but it's there.

This isn’t plasma days. You’re worrying too much.
i also still have my plasma from 2011 and use it everyday with my appletv’s.

Does anyone know if Apple TV apps on third-party TV's like this just allow you to watch your Apple/iTunes content and channels, or does it also show your whole "Up Next" list from HBO, Hulu, etc? Not sure if the Apple TV app could launch a Hulu app on a TV (like it does on the Apple TV device), but even if it just showed your full Up Next list, that would be a nice start. Apple TV 4K devices are so expensive...
I'd be curious to read a comprehensive comparison and list of pros and cons of integrated software Apple TV service version the actual Apple TV product.

If you're looking to stream anything on your TV, you're better off buying a streaming box and connecting it to you TV. I learned the hard way that relying on a manufacturer to provide such support over time is a pipe dream. Sony in particular is notorious for dropping support, so don't buy a TV because they promise Netflix or the like is built right in.

The makers of streaming boxes whole bread and butter is supporting all the myriad of apps out there... not the TV manufacturer. You want to stream, get a box... that TV is dumb no matter how smart they claim it is.

Enabling WiFi on your Smart TV is ludicrous. Google and the TV manufacturer track everything.

Just hook up an Apple TV and have piece of mind

I agree. The only reason I haven't upgraded my AppleTV HD to the 4k one is because I know in my heart that the second I do, apple will release an upgraded AppleTV 4k that's more powerful for gaming, and I'd want that.

I'm happy I bought the Apple TV 4K when I bought the new TV (Sony 950H). When I heard about the privacy concerns connecting to the actual TV, I figured this was safer. Now that Apple hasn't released any new Apple TVs, it ended up being a good purchase. I just wish I wasn't as confused about what I could get on 4K like I am. Why aren't the networks broadcasting in 4K yet, so when I watch Youtube TV, I can watch Hockey in 4K.

Saw a software update this morning on my XB900f, must be what it was. Although I use an AppleTV 4k for my streaming, it sure would be nice to have Airplay/Homekit on the TV so that I can use it in automations, mainly when I leave the house; shut off the TV, turn off the lights, lock doors, etc

Yes the screen saver comes on after few minutes and then the Apple TV turns itself off and the tv with it after few minutes more.

It does not. It will only show stuff that can be played directly in the TV app.

I would argue the opposite. I bought a Sony android TV and UHD player. The UHD player never gets any updates but apps on my TV do therefore my TV is superior. At some point my TV will not get updates and then i can decide on a new TV or adding a streaming device.

Further for energy efficiency using my TV for streaming is better plus it is quicker than changing inputs and waiting for another device to boot.

Mine has a wired connection but what would Google get from my TV that is bad? How is this worse than using Facebook?

Good, the Apple TV 4K connected to my Sony set can finally go in the trash, the Android UI (and especially the way, way, way better remote) can take over everything.

How anyone can think pissing around switching between HDMI ports in 2020 is good UI is behind me.

Had all versions of the Apple TV but got rid of it about 2 years ago since 4K Youtube didnt work. I don't know about you other Sony OLED folks, but I turned off chromecast and the other Google services on my TV. It made a HUGE difference in speed. Nothing easier than using the built in Netflix and Youtube apps on my Sony. If/when they release the next AppleTV, I'll look into it, for now...

Unless you have nothing else connected to the TV, you'll still have to change inputs. Most people have a variety of devices besides an ATV like cable boxes, PS4, Xbox, Switch, computer, etc. And there's no pissing around when you have a Harmony Elite and can have everything automatically turn on and to the proper setting with the tap of a single button. 🤷‍♂️

There could be absolutely NOTHING useful Google could get from my watching habits. What are they going go to do, recommend me Ads while watching TV? They can listen to my conversations all day long for all I care.

Don't get me wrong, I hate facebook and marketing people are the scum of the earth but we haven't reach a point where they directly affect me.
