Sony XAVC-S importing to iMovie

Little help required.

I am importing Sony XAVC-S video files to iMovie.

I am using iMovie import, it is converting them to a mov format and taking a while.

Is this correct and will I loose any quality with the conversion to mov?

Yes, there will be some loss of quality. There always is with conversion.
