I've read that you can use the iPod as an alarm clock, having it play your favourite tunes to wake you up.

Does this mean that you need to have it hooked up to some external speakers? (or be sleeping with the ear phones in/on!)

And if you do need to hook it up to speakers/entertainment centre, is that easily done, or does it need special cables?

Yes you can do music but, you can also have it sound off the alert noise, no headphones required. The alarm is is really loud but unfortunately it only goes off once for a short period of time, enough time to wake me but I could never see my wife waking up to it.... no snooze feature either.
