I did that as well, I dont think it does anything because in list view the "kind" column used to reflect the change you made to the string, now after relaunching Finder it doesnt change and still says "Folder" instead of "~Folder"

Right. I've never seen it update the "Folders" text in "Arrange by Kind" it simply treats objects that ARE Folders as though they have a space or a ~ in front of them.

In previous versions it worked when dealing with "Arrange by Kind", now however, it doesn't. It still does the trick if you "Arrange by Name" which is short of what I desire.

So, it's still impossible to put folders on top? Used to have Totalfinder to do this in Snow Leopard... Thought Apple would have fixed it in Mavericks... :(

Hack to put Folders on Top

Use the new Tag feature to tag folders with _ or some other character. Then arrange by Tag. This works, but you have to add tags to your folders, which can be done en masse. I'd like a better solution, but this works in the meantime.

The xtrafinder update will hopefully bring this back whenever the dev releases one.

Still no way to sort the folders on top, hopefully Xtrafinder soon comes with a new update!

Xtrafinder update .18 out Nov. 9 2013 still doesn't list folders first when sorting by kind.

Thanks zabagabe, at least now if I sort by name the folders are on top.

Yes, it's possible to have folders always on top in 10.9. But you need arrange by Kind for it in View Options, and also, in your system preferences, setup Spotlight search results, so you have folders on top there too.

This problem has now percolated down to OSX 10.8.5.

Wish they'd stop recruiting from Microsoft.

I came across this thread while google searching for an answer to this problem. I found a solution at this link: http://www.howtogeek.com/67100/force-your-mac-to-put-folders-on-top-of-files-windows-style/

I can confirm that this worked for me 100% in OS X 10.9.1. The only thing I did differently than what was shown in the tutorial is that I used PlistEdit Pro to make the file change instead of TextEdit, but that really shouldn't matter.

I also have Sort set to Kind, but the AVI files (and others before F in the alphabet) are no longer listed above folders. Folders appear first across the board now.

for me it does not work, some files like zip adobe and other are before folders.... why??

probably I have to use italian.lproj

Hi guys, there is an easier solution to this sorting problem. Open any folder, right click in it and choose Show View Options. After that set it up like this: Arrange by: Name, Sort by: Kind. That’s it. Folders shown before files alphabetically sorted.

Not really ...

Now copy an app into that folder and report back to us what's on top of the finder window. ;)

This looked like it was going to SOOO be the answer to my quest, but the contents of my infoPlist.strings file don't look a THING like the example, likely because I am using v 10.9.4, and they have likely changed everything. The solution Vladas suggested just above yours does a reasonable job of approximating what I am looking for. But I realy want the files to alpha beneath the folders, rather than alpha within kind. Alas.

Anyone had success with something like Velvet Man's solution on 10.9.4?

For those of you who may still be having problems with this issue of folders on top in Mac OS X Finder windows, a short while ago I wrote this easy, step-by-step tutorial. I am currently using Yosemite DP 8, and this procedure DOES work for me, and many others:

http://www.endtimeprophecy.net/Blog/2014/09/18/how-to-sort-folders-on-top-in-os-x-finder-windows/

Thanks, I'll try this when I get home. Not having folders on top has been really bugging me (being a Windows user also...).

This Webpage is not available

RumorzGuy,
:( Sadly this page doesn't seem to be available any longer (or right now). Too bad, because I can't get either of the above methods to work. The Terminal example on the first page of the thread seems like it should work. That is to say I can do all of the steps, and save it, and it looks correct. But it has no effect on the Finder view, no matter how I sort with Kind or Name. The more recent How to Geek instructions don't work, because the InfoPlist.strings file doesn't look a thing like the example in the text editor. This is probably because the file needs to be converted before opening in a text editor. But I am new enough to MACs that I don't know how to do that, or to what format it needs to be converted.

Hi,

could you please let me know what is the goal of this ?

No offense here, I just don't get it.

Thank you.

Bruno,

The Goal is to have finder views display folders first, followed by the rest of the folder's contents alphabetized. Windows users are accustomed to this sort of view. The convenience is that you have to scroll less when you are searching for a file that is several folders deep.

dholcomb, I apologize for the inconvenience. I had my web server down for a number of hours today in order to conduct some OS updates. My server is now back online, so you should be able to access the entry on my blog now.

Thanks for your patience.

Wouldn't you know the moment I went to look at these instructions would happen to be when you had the server down. Figures. Thanks for letting me know it's back up.

Your instructions worked as advertised. Thanks for that. I have only one remaining problem, and it's an overly picky one, but here it is:

After the folders sort at the top, I would prefer that all files are alphabetized by name, and not sorted by kind first, then alphabetized. Anyone know how to do that?

That is a bit of a tricky one, but what I have done in my case is play around with both the "Arrange By" and "Sort By" options for the same window. That might enable you to get what you are after.
