Thank you for that!Considering Apple is advertising the ability to send messages via satellite in iOS 18 with no mention of cost, I’m guessing this will remain included. Here’s what they’re saying on their website in the iOS 18 preview:
Messages via satellite
With the satellite capabilities on iPhone 14 or later, you can stay connected with friends and family over iMessage or SMS even without cellular or Wi-Fi service. When texting people on iMessage, you’ll also be able to use key features like sending and receiving messages, emoji, and Tapbacks. And all your iMessages sent over satellite are end-to-end encrypted.
iOS 18 Preview
iOS 18 makes iPhone even more personal, with deeper customization, new ways to connect, easier-to-find photos, and support for Apple Intelligence.www.apple.com
Although if you look at the fine print at the bottom of the page it does say this:
- Messages via satellite will be available in iOS 18 along with our existing satellite features in the United States on iPhone 14 and later. A carrier plan is required. SMS message rates may apply.
As you mentioned Apple has extended the free SOS via Satellite to 2 years. They’ve not said beyond that. I expect it will be addressed in the iPhone 16 launch; either extended again or pricing released.Since Apple gave us iPhone 14 owners 2 years of free SOS service, does anyone know how much for the 3rd year will cost ?
Maybe better if I just upgrade my 14PM and 14+ to 16PM and 16+ ?
Maybe Apple will "force" those that are on the fence about upgrading their iPhone ?As you mentioned Apple has extended the free SOS via Satellite to 2 years. They’ve not said beyond that. I expect it will be addressed in the iPhone 16 launch; either extended again or pricing released.

Two years of service was being provided from the beginning. Last year, it was announced it would be extended a year for existing iPhone 14 users, so would that not put it at three years for the early purchasers?Since Apple gave us iPhone 14 owners 2 years of free SOS service, does anyone know how much for the 3rd year will cost ?

^^^ This.Likely — it’s a free perk that comes with new iPhones for a couple years, then pay up after that. It’s still free and they haven’t officially declared what it will eventually cost, but rumors are that it won’t be free forever
