So Calif
Since Apple gave us iPhone 14 owners 2 years of free SOS service, does anyone know how much for the 3rd year will cost ?

Maybe better if I just upgrade my 14PM and 14+ to 16PM and 16+ ?

I suspect the free service is not tied to hardware, but Apple ID or even your real info. Otherwise it’s too easy to extend the “free trial”.

Are there any iPhone 14 owners asking if there will be a charge for the emergency SOS service past 2 years ?

Considering Apple is advertising the ability to send messages via satellite in iOS 18 with no mention of cost, I’m guessing this will remain included. Here’s what they’re saying on their website in the iOS 18 preview:

Messages via satellite

With the satellite capabilities on iPhone 14 or later, you can stay connected with friends and family over iMessage or SMS even without cellular or Wi-Fi service. When texting people on iMessage, you’ll also be able to use key features like sending and receiving messages, emoji, and Tapbacks. And all your iMessages sent over satellite are end-to-end encrypted.

Although if you look at the fine print at the bottom of the page it does say this:

  1. Messages via satellite will be available in iOS 18 along with our existing satellite features in the United States on iPhone 14 and later. A carrier plan is required. SMS message rates may apply.

Thank you for that!
Appreciate it.

Now it makes it more difficult to upgrade from my 14+ and 14PM to the 16....

As you mentioned Apple has extended the free SOS via Satellite to 2 years. They’ve not said beyond that. I expect it will be addressed in the iPhone 16 launch; either extended again or pricing released.

Maybe Apple will "force" those that are on the fence about upgrading their iPhone ?

So far, love my 14+ (longest battery life); but hate my 14PM (heavy and low battery life).

Two years of service was being provided from the beginning. Last year, it was announced it would be extended a year for existing iPhone 14 users, so would that not put it at three years for the early purchasers?

Likely — it’s a free perk that comes with new iPhones for a couple years, then pay up after that. It’s still free and they haven’t officially declared what it will eventually cost, but rumors are that it won’t be free forever

^^^ This.

I wanted to know what Apple will start charging for the SOS Emergency feature.

Love my 14+ with it's huge battery life over my 14PM.

If it's going to cost, I'll trade in for the 16+ this fall...

‘It should be like 911 and if it is an emergency and you have no service, the satellite system should work.

If it's going to be like 911 then a monthly fee would be charged similar to how phone bills typically include some sort of 911 fee charged by the state. Apple could charge a monthly fee or roll that fee into the price of the phone.

Not. You can pick up any phone, no matter if it has a SIM card or not and you can use 911. I doubt seriously there will be a charge for 911 satellite service, ever . . . .

Yes, but 911 services are paid for at least in part through 911 fees charged on phone bills.
Well then after your service has been cancelled while you are stranded in the middle of nowhere, just sit there and do nothing . . . . LOL!
