Sound card Testing

Is there a way for me to test my sound card to see if it's working properly?

I'm trying to record something with garageband using my podxt live, and it makes a crackling/popping sound every now and then. I plugged headphones directly into the podxt live and it doesn't make the crackling/popping sound... so I'm wondering if there might be something wrong with the sound card, or the sound card isn't made to do this.

I'm using a new macbook pro
