Sound! I need help

So when using my macbook 2.4ghz and I try to turn down the volume using the keyboard. But when it shows the volume going down, the volume doesn't go down. Sorry I know this is confusing, I will try to explain it better. When I use the keyboard to turn down the volume it shows the volume going down, but it doesn't actually turn down the volume?

A friend had this happen on her 2.2GHZ MacBook Black - it comes and goes (eg, one day it'll work and the next it won't). Can you still turn down the sound from the slider in the Menu Bar?

see how it shows the sound all the way up but the squares are almost all the way down. The only way I can control volume is if I use the volume bar in the videos like youtube or something.

The white arcs don't change - only the number of squares. If you're actually playing something, does the volume change?

Restarting helped, thanks. Can't believe I didn't think of that.
