Sound icon missing

can someone help me, my sound icon is missing from the menu bar.
I went to pref--sound--checked show in menu---& still nothing.

I have a 12" PB w/ leopard

Maybe try repairing permissions? If it is checked it should be there...

how do I repair permissions? also when I hit the F4 or F5 sound button...it has the "0" with the "/" through the "0" symbol??
