Sound issue - because of XP?

I've noticed that whenever I start up using OSX the volume on the machine is set a few 'squares' down. This never used to happen as what you set it at, stayed. The only thing I can think of is XP? Audio MIDI setup has volume at 100% for both sliders.
 
The exact same thing has happened to my iMac. It happened to me when I restarted after downloading and installing Mac OS X 10.4.6, so i don't think its to do with windows XP on bootcamp.
