Running Lion 10.7.5, "Internal Speakers" are the only output option in Preferences/Sound; when I plug in external speakers to the headphone receptacle, it recognizes "headphones", and the sound plays through the external speakers.

However, there are times when I want to use my headphones to monitor (using computer early in morning when others are asleep) or listening to sermons on my iPod (without preaching to everyone within earshot)...without constant plugging/unplugging of devices.

Is there a way to accomplish this??? Thanks for any assistance.:)

You're certainly not the first person to want this functionality. I don't think there's a way to be selective without plugging/unplugging. I wish there were.
