Sound Issues: speakers "clicking off" and loud static output

Ok so every once in awhile, after taking my headphones out, the laptop's speakers won't kick in and start working. There is just a loud "click" when I try to raise the volume. Then, when I try to re-insert headphones, there is just extremely loud static.

I really don't know what to do, any help would be appreciated
