Sound on macbook locked

i've tried to follow other forums concerning this type of problem, but could not resolve issue. Basically the sound of my mac is locked. My external speakers will not work. Once i plug in the earphones everything goes back to normal. But as soon as i get them off, a red light appears in the audio input. I've restarted the mac...Anyone's got a solution?
