I have just installed Lion and bought a external monitor for a bit more screen real estate when working at home. The monitor is a Samsung P2770HD i have plugged it into my macbook through HDMI using the Moshi mini display to HDMI. I can get a perfect picture when i set the monitor to extend my Macbook however when i change the sound output settings to the monitor there is still no sound...
The speakers are fine on the monitor as i have tested them with my playstation, also i have the newest MacBook Pro (2.7GHz i7 8GB of RAM) that supports Audio out with HDMI. Any ideas on what i am doing wrong?

I too am having issues using Mini Display to HDMI out for audio support.

I am routing mine through my Onkyo receiver and onto a Sharp LCD TV. Prior to Lion, I had zero issues with the picture displaying properly on the TV, and the sound being processed through the receiver and home theater speakers.

Since Lion only the picture will display, and in my audio output options the Onkyo is no longer being recognized.

Any help appreciated! I'm sure it's just some compatibility bugs that will get worked out, but the sooner the better.
