I'm quite surprised. I got a new 2020 M1 Air less than three months ago to replace my 2016 Pro and already there's a shiny patch on the space bar where my thumb usually hits it. I've hardly used it too, no document writing, just mainly browsing and watching things.

I noticed when I got the Air the keys felt a lot softer and looked matt compared to the 2016 Pro which felt much harder and looked more satin/glossy. The Pro I used a ton throughout university too - lots and lots of writing.

Macbook Pro 2016 after almost 7 years of heavy use:

The lighting is different, but take my word for it the Air looks much worse IRL. Even if that patch had the same wear on both devices, it would look worse on the Air because it contrast more with the matt finish. Still, it looks like the patch on the Air is even more shiny than that of the Pro.

I guess they changed what kind of plastic they use. I wish they had stuck with their old receipe.

Yup most of the keys on my M2 Air are shiny but it doesn't bother me.

If it bugs you just wear a pair of white dress gloves while using it. That will prevent the oils in your skin from getting on the keys.

i use a cover case on keyboard cause of this. My keys are not shiny and notebook looks like new. Apparently it is not oil from skin, it is just normal wear and tear of the keyboard plastic. You can replace keys if you want
