I've been thinking about adding a second one in my living room for a stereo pair, but I'm afraid of investing if it's about to be changed/cancelled.

Same problem. I use a projector with an Apple TV as my "main TV" (to avoid the scary NHK man!) and don't really want to buy a TV.

At the moment, I use AirPods or Sony XM4 for audio but would like to use a wireless speaker and the HomePod makes sense. I just am reluctant to buy the bigger unit when the smaller device has been more recently upgraded. I am rather surprised the unit didn't get a silent update at the same time.

One thing that I didn't consider is the Atmos ability in the HomePod. That makes me think we might get a refresh with a new chip. Hopefully you can pair with the old one for a stereo pair.

If Apple releases a new HomePod with U1, and an Apple TV with U1, they could do some interesting things with Home Theatre. If you used minis as surrounds, the speakers should know where they all are in your room.

Lordy! Do tech sites and social media sites put out news when Dell, HP or Sonos is out of stock on a certain COLOR of a product? Is this really necessary? Okay so the Grey HomePod is out of stock. Anyone interested in buying it would see that when they go on the Apple website to buy it just like they would any other brand such as when you buy clothes or sneakers from Nike or Adidas. It doesn't necessarily indicate a new model coming.

Well this comment didn't age well...

Perhaps, next time, the author of the comment might want to tone down the sarcasm and accept the idea that, just maybe, those of us who have been following Apple for a long time have a pretty good intuition about unexpected events in Apple Land mean?
