Mine still looks just as it did when it came out of the box. But I am using one of Apple's black leather cases. I'm sure if I took it out of that case it would soon gain some unwanted character. But I prefer my phones in cases. That leather case will offer at least some drop protection.

I would like to chime in on this. For the simple fact moreover because regardless of slate or space gray or silver or whatever, it STRICTLY has to do with how the person handles their phone on a regular basis.

My point proven: My sister had a i5 silver and it had huge heavy dents on the edges even though she never dropped it but she always throws it in her huge purse. this is not the bad example though lol read below

I bought a 2 week old 64gb att iphone 5s in space gray from a local dude on CL. When I met up to my surprise OMG this phone had dents on the back scratches ALL over the sides, it was a big mess and I could not fathom that someone would treat a $850 piece of electronics like this. So I did what any one of us would do, I bought it :) This was the first time ever I carried the phone completely naked for a one week period considering it was already dented and scratched what do I have to lose lol

Its amazing how different and nice and premium the phone feels naked. I have had every iphone since the 2g and wow I love carrying it naked.

Needless to say I just got it switched out today and put ghost armor screen protector and now am debating either carrying it naked or putting a clear case on. I am just nervous about what if I drop it on concrete, what do you all think?

Unless it's an otterbox, your phone will be damaged if you drop it regardless.

Yeah, space gray is *way* more robust than the slate. My slate after a year looked like a dog chewed on it. I've already had some incidents with my space gray and no damage.

I don't believe that for a New York minute....

Better make it two then, my 5 has 2 light scuffs on the back bottom right above the base plate, launch day, no case or cover, only cosmetic marks. I bet it will piss you off even more than none of my previous 3 iPhones have any cosmetic damage, and I haven't used a case on any. It's really not that hard to do.

I have black and slate and have nearly no scratches. I use a plastic clear case that is extremely thin. It's people who neglect their phone. I place it in a pocket without any other change or keys. It is still in flawless condition.

The colour switch was done to combat this problem. Non issues and you won't see any issues.

hey real quick, how do you know this? I'm not doubting you but I just wanted to read any more info about it!

Not really...Every iphone has held up better, cosmetically, than the black slate iP5, IMO.

People CAN take care of their phone…

Has nothing to do with people not taking care of them. That particular phone was very susceptible to scuffs\peeling\flaking, etc.

It really, really baffles me why they're using aluminum now. The stainless steel was so much better of a material for something designed to not look like crap after a few months of normal use. By comparison, the aluminum is now all over the phone and may as well be made of butter.

Absolutely.

Aluminium is really easy to scratch. From Moh's hardness scale:

Talc: 1
Aluminium: 2 - 2.4
Steel: 5 - 5.5
Stainless Steel: 5.5 - 6.3
Glass: 4.5 - 6.6
Diamond: 10

Granted the aluminium is anodised, but that thin coating can be broken in localised places. You might be able to scratch stainless steel with anodised aluminium, but the stainless steel is more resilient in keeping its finish through daily wear-and-tear.
