I saw a few space Grey Mbp online that have experienced fading, some look very poor.

I am about to pick one up, I have a hard case ready to put on. I did see some reports that this case may cause heat dispersion problem resulting in fading.
Can anyone confirm this?

Do clear protectors either side of the trackpad help stop the fading I’ve seen there?

Thanks

It seems to depend on how you treat it. Space gray looked amazing at first sight but I've heard issues of anodizing fading off around the sharp edges and palm rest areas showing discolourations. These things are never an issue w/ silver and I have seen people complaining about durability of the anodizing coating on space grey. Apple has made the space grey darker in 2018 and they seem to be tweaking the colour every year so it remains to be seen how space grey will stand the test of time.

Yes I read that this years is darker. Hopefully a fix? I don’t know much about the science of anodizing or even if the process can be improved.

I have only ever owned silver but think I like the look of the space grey. Have bought a case (A speck copy) but not sure if this was what was causing issues with some users fading, they also seemed unsure.

With apple care they aren’t swapping them out as it is only cosmetic apparently.
Wasn’t there a fadegate back on the white MacBook years ago? Apple admitted it was their manufacturing fault and covered them.

That hard case is probably gonna do more damage than if you just leave it without one.
How exactly is the damage caused is it heat related? And if so only on the space Grey?

The case is vented on the bottom, I’ve always used them on silver models and has kept them In perfect condition for years.

A lot depends on the lighting under which one is viewing the Space Grey MBP.....in some cases it looks darker, in other cases it looks almost silver. When I first opened the box containing mine and removed the protective plastic covering it, I was at a table right under a chandelier and the lighting made the new machine look lighter than it actually is, to the point where I actually double-checked the labeling on the box and also grabbed my 12" MacBook, also Space Grey, for comparison, and then looked at my silver 15" 2015 MBP for a further comparison. When viewed in natural daylight, the Space Grey is definitely....Space Grey, not silver! :).

With regard to the question about putting a protective case on the MBP -- through the years I have never done that with any of my machines and they have always remained looking just great, no stains, no blotches, no discolorations of any kind, and no scratches, either. However, I am not a student or someone who carries a computer to school or work every day, or who participates in a lot of outdoor and indoor activities with the machine accompanying me everywhere. I do slide my. machines into a protective sleeve for transportation when traveling, but that is not all that frequent and definitely not the same as using an actual case meant to stay on it on a permanent/semi-permanent basis. A friend has a 13" MBP and he does keep it all the time in a protective case because he carries it everywhere and uses it in all sorts of environments, including on his boat, and wants his machine to always be protected, regardless of what he is doing and regardless of what situations he and the machine are in.

No, dust and dirt will collect and end up marring the aluminum.

I completely agree with this one of my friends who owns a 2016 MBP 13 inch put on a case and it scratched the boohoo out of his MacBook Pro because the dust gets trapped underneath and just does massive damage as the case slides back and forth.

If you are going to get a case I suggest you get BodyGuardz ultra tough body protector I currently have one installed for about 3 days with my case from incase and so far so good.

Dark colors look great only in ads. In real life, they will look dirty pretty soon.

Anyone have experience with the pure clear tech 21 case?

Thx

Yes like I said above I use the ultra guard by body guard along with my incase case. Its an amazing combo keeps it scratch free of the dust and dent free from the case

Is the issue still remains with newest M1 macbooks?

So far my Space Grey M1 MBP looks as nice as the day back in late December that I unboxed her. That said, she hasn't really gone out-and-about much as I haven't been traveling and although I've been fully vaccinated still haven't really gotten back into the social scene with friends all that much yet and so the M1 has been staying at home.

I've always been a fan of silver over space grey, but regardless of preference, I've noticed the space grey can show scratches and worn spots easier.
