Hey All,

I'm going to replace my 3 year old MacBook Pro and choosing between space grey and silver. Just wondering how everyone is feeling about their choice 6 months down the track? Also to those with the space grey colour, how's the finish holding up with scratches etc?

Thanks!

I have a Space Grey. Not a scratch or mark. The finish is still as it was when I bought it.

Given the price I am careful with it and have a laptop backpack to carry it around it in but I don't have a laptop cover or anything, just put it in the padded backpack. do travel with it a fair bit too.

Thanks. Colour-wise you still happy with space grey?

Yeah, very. Personally I prefer darker colours than the lighter for laptops and phones. If they had a darker Magic Mouse that would be good, white mouse looks a little strange next to it, but thats the only thing I would say. As its a laptop if the mouse is out my hand is usually over it so not so much of a big issue

I picked up space grey and I love it. I haven't had any issues with scratches or anything like that, I am fairly careful with it but I've been using it every day as a laptop and traveling with it since I bought it so it hasn't been sitting on a desk all day. I like that it's darker so it blends in to the background well when in use. I really like the finish and it's been a great machine.

Space Grey is absolutely fine with no scratches or anything. Any deep scratch is just more noticeable on the dark machine over a lighter colour, but they don't scratch easier or anything. I prefer the space grey too, I find the contrast between the screen/keyboard and silver body more distracting.

I've had my Space Gray since launch and would still choose Space Gray again if ordering today. I love it and it doesn't have any scratches on it, but it does stay home and I'm very careful with it.

The finish on the store models at a place I work at have held up well to constantly seeing not-so-loving usage. It's a pretty robust finish. Scratches do show, and are a bit more noticeable than silver, but are not nearly as noticeable as a black power coated/anodized piece of aluminum. Overall, it has very good scratch resistance.

Like with the silver, the finish is extremely resistant against the permanent changes in texture/coloration/reflectivity that the oils on the hand/finger/palm + repeated friction of usage can cause.

I had the first generation 12" MacBook in Space Gray when it came out and gave it to my mom this past Christmas. It looked brand new and still does today.
I purchased the 2016 15" tbMBP in Space Gray when it came out and it looks brand new today as well. I do take very good care of my things but it does get used and carried around in a backpack on a regular basis.

I have a space grey Macbook and I went for a silver Pro this time around. I wish the space grey was really more of a matte black. That would be amazing.

With the iPhone 7 ditching Space Grey and the fact that Space Grey has changed slightly every year since it was introduced (with the iPhone 5s in 2013) I think that color will turn old soon.

Silver will always be Silver and it's a classic Apple notebook color, it was introduced back in 2001 with the PowerBook G4. You just know it's going to last.

That said if they release the MacBook in either black or white I'd buy that immediately.

My husband have the Space Grey and it looks really nice!

I really wish they introduce Rose Gold in MBP. currently deciding whether or not to get the new MB which have the Rose Gold option.

I can confirm - after 7 months - that the Space Gray finish is exactly the same as when I bought it. Please note that I usually don't rest my palms on the MacBook itself (not intentionally, this is just the way I type), instead they hover above - so I cannot say about the palm marks (still, I doubt they would appear).

I take care of my MBP, but I don't have a sleeve and carry it to work every day in my Booq backpack.

I doubt it - Space Gray is not going away anywhere. iPhone 8 may have it (all the leaks show a SG finish) and the iPhone 7 thing was just a new look thing, just as it was the case with iPhone 5. And, iMac Pro is exclusively Space Gray. Honestly, it seems to me you're trying to justify your purchase.

Look, Silver is a GREAT look. Really, I love how silver MBPs look. But Space Gray is NOT: 1. less classic Apple, 2. more prone to wear, 3. going away anytime soon.

I have space grey MACBOOK Pro AND REGULAR sliver MacBook Air both colors are beautiful but I definitely love the space grey

I have had two MB and a MBP in Space Grey. The finish held up well and I had no complaints. Honestly, I find it better than black in almost every way.

Really wish they made the iPhone in Space Gray or Silver with Black front still.

However.... I just sold my 2016 MBP for a new 2017 MBP and am going back to Silver. (4ghz at turbo!)

I miss the classic look and stark contrast between the keys and finish.

Can't believe I'm saying this, but I feel Silver looks extremely clean and unique these days. Man... how things change.

Good luck!

First of all I did not purchase a Silver MacBook Pro instead of Space Grey myself as I own a 2015 model. I did have the 2016 model for a short while in Space Grey and it looked terrific. The OP however wanted to know if the color lasts and while it may be scratch resistant I just brought up another point.

Silver will always be silver, but the painted colors might change as they have for the last four years across all devices. Do with that what you want. :)

I once tried to clean an aluminum Briggs & Stratton small engine with oven-cleaner. I let it sit on there for an hour. When I came back to check on it, it looked the same way as the new space gray MBPs look. Horrible chemical corrosion. Needless to say, I'd never buy the space gray.

Silver, to me looks like all the old MBP models but space gray is stunning and it stands out. Hoping apple would do matte black version like iPhone.

Not a single space gray device I have changed color over the years. My iPads, my iPhones - nothing. I really don't see this one doing that either. It's just FUD, if you ask me.

I'm a Silver guy.
I love the classic look (have both colors around the family and see them often)

That's actually a key reason I love the Silver.
I want the opposite of standing out in any crowd of machines personally.

I like color change periodically and have had silver, space grey, matte black, gold and rose gold on various Apple devices. That said I think the space grey on my 2016 MBP that I've had since launch looks very sharp and classy and if I were to replace it today I would still go for space grey.

I did not think you could interpretate what I wrote that way lol. What I actually meant was that Apple changed the look of Space Grey if you compare for example iPhone 5S with 6S.
