I'm still seeing the junk folder on Mavs.

Junk, yes, but I used to have a Spam folder, as well. Now it's gone.

I have never had a spam folder. These are IMAP folders mirrored by your email provider, in my case iCloud. Who is your email provider?

Gmail.

Go to gmail.com and go to the settings. Look in the labels section and make sure you have "All Mail" and "Spam" both check marked to show in IMAP.

Mavs Mail changes the way Gmail IMAP is handled so this may be what you are seeing. Give this a read.
