So I have to say I'm impressed by the stock speaker that come with the iMac.🙂

However when I plug in external speakers, even when I turn up the volume on the speakers and on the mac, they don't get very loud? Is this normal?

😱

That does not sound normal unless they are very cheap, old unpowered speakers designed to work with a computer that didn't have any internal speaker.

Most likely there is something wrong in your hooking up. Make sure the speakers are plugged into power if they have a plug. Also, the iMac has two 3.5mm jacks on the back. One is headphone and the other is sound in, make sure you have the speakers connected to the headphone jack.

iMac's have always come with built-in speakers. On the latest design, I think they're tucked away on the bottom.

To the OP
1. make sure the speakers are plugged in correctly
2. Turn the System volume up
3. Turn the iTunes/whatever volume up
4. then adjust the external speaker volume
