Hmm, it's weird – especially if you take into account how little I like about the MBA. But this is something I really like about the MBA (wishing it would spread wildly):
Since a lappy is crap soundwise, what's the use of speakers? As I see it, it's for playing OS-warnings and that sort of thing, for watching a short clip and not much else. That way, a single speaker is more than enough.

I could do without any, as it is. I even have all my UI-sounds off. And I never use my MBP without headphones (well, I do – just not for audio, and I always carry atleast one set of headphones).

That HAS to be wrong. This thing is geared toward watching movies on planes, as well as music, so it is doubtable it is mono.

The headphone plug can clearly do stereo. I'm not sure I'd agree that this thing is geared toward watching movies on a plane though.

And the hits keep on coming. Mono sound, awesome! We're truly well into the 20th century.

Yep. It doesn't have reclining bucket seats or a spare tire either. 🙄

I've never once see anyone on a plane using the speakers built into their laptop or portable DVD player. I'd have a few (polite) words to say if the person next to me tried to do that!

The cabin is way too noisy for it and if you did, because of the noise, I highly doubt you'd be able to tell the difference between stereo and mono sound.

I think RichP was commenting about the claim that the headphone plug was mono as well.

I have an MBA, and listen to a good deal of music.

The headphone port is stereo, and is very good at it. When I use it with my headphones or multimedia speakers, the sound is very good. (Rich, deep, colourful, good stereo separation, bass response... you name it)

Mono is good enough for a laptop. My previous laptop (Toshiba) had Harman Kardon virtual surround-sound stereo speakers. They are louder, but definitely not much better than the MBA's mono speaker. The mono-speaker can do music pretty good. Its probably the same speaker used on the iPhone.

The speaker isn;t that bad as long as you have good equalizer settings.

I wouldn't mind either as the holes on my MBP always get gunked up and looks terrible.
