My aunt recently got a new iPhone 8 and while playing around on it, I noticed how much clearer her speakers sound than mine.

Will keeping mine in my pocket cause the speakers to maybe pick up lint and degrade the sound quality? It sounds like there's static or like the sound is too loud, but it's the same song playing through the same app.

I recently posted about some possible corrosion in my charging port. I haven't been able to see any, but this has been going on for many months.

Are both units using the same settings?
Your phone's speaker might have a little damage as you may use it more often than your aunt's. It is also possible that lint or dust gets through those holes but it shouldn't sound like static, I think. If at all, it should sound muffled.

I highly doubt that corrosion could be a cause for the sound issue but I could be wrong.

I was going to set up an appointment but they’re booked on Thursday. I might swing by and talk to them, see what they say.

Did anything come of this? I bought an iPhone 8 at launch and marveled at the quality of both speakers. Then I got a second one a year later for work and its audio is far better than my old one. And now a few months later my wife got an iPhone 8 and hers sounds far better than both of mine. The main bottom speaker seems okay on mine but the earpiece speakers sound awful. They look perfect though— no visible issues.

Sorry! I thought I updated this.

I took it to Apple and let them know the issue. They did an audio test using a special iPhone dock and their diagnostic software. They replaced it after that under AppleCare+.

I don’t know what would happen if it was out of the warranty period. This is the 2nd or 3rd iPhone I’ve had this issue with.
