The three I hear continually mentioned are the JBL Creature II, the Altec Lansing FX6021 - 2.1 Speakers, and the Harmon Kardon SoundSticks.

I own JBL Creatures II and love them. They can get pretty loud and still have great sound. Even low, the sound is very clear. The bass can hit too. They are probably the best speakers at the price for a computer. The soundsticks are good too, I have only heard them a few times so I can't fully judge. Go to an Apple store (or any PC store) and they usually have both the SoundSticks and Creatures on display and you can listen to them.

The JBLs are awesome. I have them and I LOVE 'em. I've heard that the soundsticks are even better but I haven't totally listened to them yet. I am considering upgrading but Im not sure if it is worth it.
