I was wondering if there is anyway to pipe the speaking utility to an audio file? i.e getting an audio file of the spoken text.

Do you mean recording text-to-speech on your Mac, or something else? You can capture system sounds etc with one of these apps http://all-streaming-media.com/record-audio-stream/direct-sound-recording-Mac-OS-X.htm
