I have a 3TB HDD and a Rosewill RX81-MP-SC (http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16817182123) enclosure and works great with 2TB across all ports, but the 3TB will not recognize regardless of USB, FireWire, etc and this is on OS X 64bit 10.6.7 and Win7 64bit.
Rather it will only see 800GB instead of the 3TB

Possible enclosure firmware/driver issues?

if thats the case any good recommendations on a capable/decent case? and any advise on any limitations? the main purpose of this drive is back-up/cloning of the two built-in internal drives of the Mac i'm using.

Yeah, 3TB is a complete mess. The enclosure's firmware and controller circuit are most likely to blame, it is a bit dated after all. Updating drivers on the computer side won't help.

Unfortunately, I don't have any specific recommendations to give. I'm simply staying clear of 3TB until things settle down.

right, the drive works fine in MacPros i tested it on a work Pro and seemed okay.
OWC's Mercury Elite says it can handle 3TB drives.
Id rather not get a RAID set up to back up my imac's 2HDDs with one drive instead of worrying about two additional drives in a RAID set up going sour.

I was in the same situation as you in not wanting to use RAID for my backs ups...

I own and use 2 of these from OWC:

These work awesome. Love the design and Firewire options. Very sturdy. The light can be a bit bright if used in a dark space.

I also think this one from them does 3TB now:

If you are interested in either of these enclosures only (sans hard drive), please read the fine print on the page that they only support up to 2TB.

No worries though, call OWC or use the online chat thing and let them know you want the enclosure only and you need the firmware flashed to support the 3TB drives and they will help. They have good support there.

Good luck with the final solution!
