i bought a speck 13" retina case from the apple store in town and on the first installation one of the back corners on the base snapped off!!

I'd try to take it back to the Apple Store - they do have a return window, even for products they don't manufacture - it's much like any other brick & mortar retailer that has a return policy for products they sell:
