Sony manufactures DSLR and compact camera sensors for most major camera brands. And with Apple's recent imaging company or imaging related buyout. I bet that is what they are aiming for. Control the bulk of camera sensor manufacturing and supply.
Buy, buy, buy

Why would you buy sony just for their dslrs. Sony digital cameras are not that great if they wanted to buy out a company for that go after a better, more focused company like canon or nikon. Plus integrating would be far easier with a company like canon. Apple absorbs the printers into the apple brand while and gets a higher quality camera company.

also adobe would be a cool idea of having even better mac-ps integrations, two other thoughts autodesk or nvidia

We're past Blu Ray. It's all about streaming.

Because the average consumer has +40Mbit/s worth of bandwidth.

Perfect, I can get something that looks just as good as DVD with ******** audio but is 720p. Amazing.
(I just have to ask, 720p from what)

Technology is suppose to take a step forward, not backward.
(See Google TV/WebTV)

Steaming is a joke. Its only advantage a small edge in connivence.

5. Remember your history: Jobs leaves Apple. starts NeXT. Apple buys NeXT. Jobs starts PIXAR, then comes back to Apple. Disney buys PIXAR....... Am I the only one who sees the bed-hopping?

Ahem.. Steve Jobs didn't start Pixar. He bought it from Lucasfilm, of which Pixar had been a part of for quite a few years by then.

Although I doubt apple will buy Sony there are a few benefits to them doing it.

1. Apple would get all of sony's media divisions (music, movies)
2. Apple would be able to acquire talent in the region of sony's semiconductor division, and PC hardware.
3. Apple could possibly get into new markets such as TV's and Gaming Systems.
4. Apple would be able to have access to all of sony's gaming technologies allowing them to include them into devices such as the iPad, iPhone, and Mac.
5. Apple would acquire a sizable customer base.
6. Apple would be able to sell the whole package(camera, software, computer) to media professionals such as Photographers, or Videographers.
7. Apple could shut down a major competitor in several of its industries (MP3, Computers, Phones)

How about the advantage of cost? Waste? Space?

The other day I was watching the film Old Dogs on my Blu Ray player. (Somewhat funny, but mostly terrible movie) For kicks we blew $5 to see how it looked from the Apple TV. We went back and forth between inputs, couldn't tell the difference in quality.

I don't think streaming is a joke. I think it is here and has potential to grow.

hmm if apple bought sony, apple can make a deal with m$ for something impt and kill the playstation :D

Luddite. What a great reason not to build out our cellular network around the world so people can use cell phones!

The best way to halt progress is not to demand progress.

Physical media is a thing of the past - the rest of the world needs to catch up. Catch up or be left behind, living life in your vans listening to 8-track tapes. Groovy, eh? :D

This rumor is the silliest thing I have ever heard. Sony wouldn't allow themselves to get bought out by Apple.

So ironically, when I spent my money on Apple, their share price was below $100. Now that they haven't got anything that I would need or want, their shares are around $300.

My last Apple purchase was a 2008 15" Unibody MacBook Pro. There's no need to replace a computer frequently now. They are well built, reliable and run all current software fast enough.

To be honest, I have found that a lot of the older Apple users (i.e. before Leopard) have slowly been losing interest in Apple products.

That's such BS. I've been an Apple user since Mac OS 8 and that's over 14 years ago and I'm more excited today about Apple's stuff than I've ever been. The majority of the people I know are Apple users for longer than me and they feel the same way about Apple's products as I do. The competition doesn't offer anything exciting to raw raw about. :p

Nikon and Canon use Sony to manufacture their Sensors so does other brands. I think it is Sony Wafer plant that Apple is after, they can retool the plant to also manufacture the next A4 processor and not have to rely on Intel to make their next version of A4 processor.

Apple and PS sounds good. :)

Canon makes their own... do a little research.
And Intel does not make the A4 CPU for Apple, it's manufactured by Samsung.

you beat me to it lol...

also i'm pretty sure nikon makes their own if not they do design them... idk im a canon user myself, but im assuming dakaemch that your thinking low end POS sensors for crappy P&S cameras, which i doubt even sony makes their own, cause the big thing that sets sony as having good cameras (P&S or dSLR) apart is their contract with zeiss which is sure to end some day, and then you'll start to see AF lenses in the EF and F mounts and a decline in Sony's market share among informed buyers (theyve already lost uninformed buyers to nikon and canon). Also i think pentax to make a strong appearance they have good build quality and potential to start putting out a full line of suburb lenses. And while i hinted at it in my previous post im not sure if an apple owned canon would be good. im not a fan of the direction canon is heading in but im not sure if apple would be a good direction either..... but i have totally digressed and i dont care im going to post this anyways even though its mostly irrelavant.... who the hell got me going on a rant anyways

I don't know if someone replied already but Netflix views themselves as primarily a streaming company now. Their shipping service is already slowly dying out as more and more shows are available to stream.

That is true and probably one of the few companies doing transition well without an identity crisis. I see the DVDs rental going for a good while if only for those that crappy bandwidth or those that want a stack of DVDs for on the road.

Perhaps Steve wants Sony, just to get to the Beatles.

"In December 1995, ATV Music Publishing was merged with Sony and renamed Sony/ATV Music Publishing. The company became the second largest music publisher in the world, owning the rights to songs by The Beatles, Elvis Presley, Eminem, Bob Dylan, and Willie Nelson. " (wiki)

Who can even start rumor like this let alone have someone belive in it?

First let me just correct somebody who said that Apple is 9 time bigger company than Sony. Nope simply not ture. Market Cap doesn't represent the total worth of the company but rather just the worth of realesed public traded stocks. Do we even know how much ownership percentage can 33B of Sony stocks give you?

Sony Corporation assets are valued over 130 billion. Apple's assets are a little bit more than a third of what Sony's are worth. In equity they are about the same around 30B-40B. In revenue Sony is also ahead with close to 80B compared to Apple's 40B.
