Is there a built in speech to text program? I know there is voice recognition software so you can open up programs and do some commands but is there something built in I can use with text edit or word?

Yes, there are two built-in options. The easy and less sophisticated option is to open System Preferences and click the Speech button. Select the Text to Speech tab and choose the voice you want and adjust it. Then in TextEdit (or any other program that supports text to speech), highlight the text you want read and select Speech --> Start Speaking from the Edit menu or select Speech --> Start Speaking Text from the Services menu.

The more advanced option is VoiceOver. It lets your computer read everything on the screen for you. Apple has a detailed manual on it.

Actually I want it to do the opposite. I want to be able to speak and have it type the text in something like Word or Text Edit. I am having problems with my hands and I am having a hard time typing a lot.

Thank you for answering though!
