Onyx will do the job!

this cleans up all our system cache, will let you disable and enable certain features. Good for routine maintenance.

Oh yeh, and the 4GB upgrade! You can get it cheaper than apple. Play.com is the best I have found so far.
The cheapest in the UK is 7dayshop.com:

I upgraded my macbook to two GB of ram, and it was worth the $41

there is a program, I forget what it is called, but it clears your programs so that instead of running on a PPC they just run on intel, which speeds it up a lot I have heard

XSlimmer, hardly a speed increase

whoa man, I wasn't trying to scare anybody- or post anything negative just to do so- I was trying to help by making you aware of a KNOWN minor issue.. I know I was VERY glad to know about it when it started happening to my computer..Forget I said anything- I'll never make that mistake again..

Nah, don't worry about it.. I took it wrong.. I agree with you that sometimes there does tend to be an overly negative tone about things that really are non-issues in the forums sometimes..

This DVD player thing is weird- while it's definitely worth noting, it's NOT worth avoiding maxing out your RAM over.. I know that sounds weird to say, but these machines are so fast when the RAm is maxed out , and the issue is so easy to avoid if you know about it that it really can be a non issue..

Seriously, don't sweat it- just enjoy the machine.. I have the same one as you, same specs and everything and I watch DVD's on it all the time..

How's your machine been running? My runs even better than I expected.. I find mine surprisingly cool for a laptop..

upgrading to 4G, did the speed increase as you guys expect it to be? still any lagging problems? I'm thinking of upgrading my blackbook and also wondering which brand would be most effective... In newegg, the kingston 1 GB ram is 93 $ while the 1 GB Crucial is 22$...

Seems to run faster, I bought mine from OWC only because I was able to talk to some one on the phone. I bought there house brand witch I paid $95.00 with a life time warranty. The guy I talked to seem pretty help full and some things I just do not whant to order with out talking to some one and avoid any returns.

4GB of OWC RAM here ($95 total when I bought a couple of months ago). Works great.

MacOS X will attempt to make use of any extra RAM in the machine by caching code from recently launched and closed applications in to memory, thus speeding up the time required to relaunch those apps. The more "free" RAM you have, the more it can do this. To make the most of this, put the machine to sleep when not using it, instead of shutting down. Shutting down will obviously erase anything cached -- my machine runs better after being on for a few days than it does when its freshly booted because of this.

Additionally, if you have a lot of "extra" RAM, you can make use of it by never quitting the applications you run frequently. I usually have Safari, Mail, Keynote, Word, Nisus Writer Express, Preview, iCal and several others launched even though they may have no open windows/files at any given time. When I need to use them, they pop right open (bypassing the relatively slow notebook hard drive compared to desktop drives).

FYI: I upgraded my 2.2GHz Macbook with 4GB of Transcend RAM and it had major issues--it wouldn't start up, and wouldn't reinstall the Mac OS. The Apple people didn't even know if for sure it was the RAM so I went through 3 laptops with them before finally ditching the RAM. Now I'm afraid to upgrade it unless it's the high quality Samsung stuff. So be forewarned. Some brands of RAM are better than others and Apple computers are increasingly choosy over them. The "better deal" may end up failing on you (mine took an average of 1 week in each machine before it freaked out), so buy the lifetime guarantee stuff, back up EVERYTHING before installing it, and start some serious meditating because you'll need all the patience in the world if you wake up one morning and your precious macbook doesn't get past the spinning gear...

I have 4GB of Transcend RAM and have had no issues. Sorry to hear your trouble.

Would I encounter the same problem if I do the 2gb upgrade (instead of 4gb)? Anyone? Thanks.

It's only with 4 GB..

I had my MacBook at Apple last night and we were able to reproduce the crash on both my system, and their diagnostic system running on my hardware.. Basically that eliminates the likelihood of it being a software issue..It's not likely that it's a logicboard since the second week I had it the logicboard failed (right after a DVD player crash I might add), so that's new, but the DVD player crashes are still there.. You never know though, I suppose..

So, another Apple Hardware issue for me.. I'm losing faith.. I've been a Mac user from the beginning (like many of us on MR) and I actually offered to pay them the 10% restocking fee to take this 3 week old computer back.. I've been the guy since OS 7 who swore up and down that I'd never even consider going to Windows..

Sad to say, but I'm losing faith.. Too many hardware problems, on too many different computers, for too many years, has me at least wondering if there's a better way..

I have a Macbook 2.2 with 4GB ram and never have problems with my DVD player and I watch a lot of movies on my notebook. I also tend to do other things at the same time like my mail and download widgets and such while surfing. I think you just got a lemon, it happens.

Get it to the point where you have about 2 GB's of RAM or less and then install a DVD to be played in DVD player.. It will crash the entire system.. Mail, widgets, and surfing the net won't use this much RAM.. Push it and you'll see..

If not, that's good to hear, but you're in the minority on this one.. It's a known issue..
