Ok, for one thing, some kids are spoiled brats.
But if you love computers and are a teenager and appreiciate that your parents buy them for you, what's that wrong with it?
I'm too young to get a "real" job at a buisness, being 13, and summer jobs are something I'd look into, but they'll never earn me enough money for a comp at this point.
My parents buy me stuff, and I really appreciate it, and I use and enjoy every piece of technology I have.

My Tech Stuff:
  • 30GB iPod: $299
  • Digital camera:About $400
  • 17" iMac G5 (and my mom's going to start sharing it with me a tad): $1299
  • 12" Powerbook G4: $1499; my mom and I share it. I use it when I need portable.

So, about $3500. But that's not quite fair. B/c I share the Powerbook, which I don't mind, but just saying. And the camera I let my parent's use if they want to, as I well should do b/c they bought it.

I know I'm very lucky to have all the stuff I have at 13. I know someday I'll have to work to get technology things.

So far this year:

Mac mini in sig - $600
Apple pro keyboard and Mighty Mouse - $78
200GB Maxtor internal hard drive - $40 (I know, I should've bought a few at that price :p )
External Firewire/USB 2.0 HD enclosure - $32

Though, I haven't spent this much in years, this has been my first computer purchase since 2001.

He's not trying to brag. This was a thread concerning how much you've spent on what peripherals. He was simply stating what he (and his parents) spent. And if you've talked with him for a while, he definitely realises that everything costs and that money comes from hard work. He just happens to be luckier than most of us.

Gotta agree with you here Mac_Head. This is a thread about how expensive the computer hobby can be. It doesn't matter who bought it for you.

That said, this thread does tread the very fine line between bragging and tabulating.

Hmm, I've bought an iBook for £660, and spent about £80 on RAM and got a Apple wireless mouse for £25. However, I sold my PowerBook for £460 in order to buy the iBook, so I'm not too far down.

I also just got a contract mobile phone as I top up about £20 a month, and now have a contract paying £20 a month for a load of free minutes and texts, so it shouldn't be any difference in price. I got a free Sony Ericsson w810i with it, which is rather fabulous in that that it's just a bit of an upgrade from my old phone with a black and white screen. :p

I try and be fairly savvy in what I buy, and so haven't spent a huge amount this year. :)

Dude, I'm 20 and I don't even have $5000 to my name...

EDIT: I should also mention that I just bought a SanDisk cruzer mini 256MB on eBay for $14 shipped - and I feel guilty for it. For some reason I've become terribly cheap in the past 6 months...

$3000 for PB (in sig), 20gig iPod, and printer. (subtract about $300 in rebates)

$99 for 6x8 Graphics Tablet

$60 for NewerTech miniStack FireWire/USB2.0 Kit

$60 for external HD

$400 for student versions of Adobe CS and Macromedia suites

and more smaller items

I usually only buy something after months of debating and asking "Do I REALLY need this?"

I am so, so, so not bragging....

I'm nail biting at the stupid amount I (and others) spend on comps.

Wow ... you guys have a lot to spend.

And camera stuff only counts if you don't make money using it. Otherwise, it's too easy to recoup your costs to spend more on better camera stuff.

Eyy eyyy eyyyyy. :p

You should've gone on a totally free contract. Free phone, free minutes/texts.. and cancel after 12 months and the entire thing won't have cost a penny. :D

Anyway........ :)

Argh, yeah, I read about that in the Guardian a while ago, and it did cross my mind when I was looking, but I couldn't remember the site. But then I also got the fear™ and thought that all the contracts were really expensive, and if I forgot to do any rebate shenganigans I would have been paying for a £30 contract (or whatever it was) instead of £20, and I would still have had to shell out that much a month anyway before the rebate. I feel a bit of a contract n00b, and wanted something simple. But I'd definitely consider such a thing next time, and cheers for the link, tis bookmarked.
