WASHINGTON (AP) -- An outbreak of E. coli in eight states has left at least one person dead and 50 others sick, federal health officials said Thursday in warning consumers not to eat bagged fresh spinach.

The outbreak of the sometimes deadly bug killed one person in Wisconsin, said Dr. David Acheson, of the Food and Drug Administration's Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition. The outbreak has sickened people -- eight of them seriously -- in Connecticut, Idaho, Indiana, Michigan, New Mexico, Oregon and Utah as well.

FDA officials do not know the source of the outbreak, other than it appears to be linked to bagged spinach. "We're advising people not to eat it," Acheson said

Advising people not to walk around with one eye open, smoking a corn-cobb pipe and have unnaturally freakish calf and forearm muscles? Absurd.

That's terrible!

My worst run-in with spinach is the funny rubbery sensation it leaves on my teeth after eating cooked spinach.

I like spinach salad with bacon and pine nuts and this onion/tomato dressing. It's soo good.
You must not be human either then. Are you perchance a jaguar :p

We substitute raisins for pine nuts and have been using a nice vegan creamy garlic dressing recently.

Raisins are like dried ticks. Yuck.

You're getting the wrong kind. Check out the selection at Trader Joes next time you want a conversation with a Dwyer supporter.

We've also used dried cranberries with some success...

I heard this story on the TV news. People getting sick is no laughing matter, but "killer spinach" is still a humorous phrase.

I like tossing fresh spinach into a salad, and I even like creamed spinach, even though I don't think it looks appetizing.

But those pictures aren't the real Popeye. This is!

Suggestions on preventive measures...

It's really concerning that, with all the technologies available, the threat of E. coli can be spread in bagged spinach and salads. We know the real culprit isn't Brutus (aka: Bluto), but I'm wondering what measures are being taken by FDA all the way down to the farmers to address cause and prevention?

I like cooked salmon (canned, don't have any other kind) and black berries in my Spinach Salad.

I already ate half a bag of my spinach (generic Kroger's brand) when they announced this ... oh well, today i just finished the rest. I'm not sick so this must be okay.
