First use case: movie + website. This is possible now with picture-in-picture, but would be so much more elegant with proper top-bottom "split view." I'm just using my first awful example from above; I've resized it to a top-bottom layout. This is MacRumors YouTube channel up top and MacRumors website in Google Chrome down below.

This example is on the 11" Pro dimensions. The standard 4:3 screen would benefit less, but it would still be great, far more useful.

I mean who doesn't want to peruse Instagram or Facebook during a boring part on that Netflix show? Or watch an iFixit youtube tutorial while reading the step-by-step webpage at the same time?

Showed the Mr this thread. He mentioned he can do this on his Note 5 in portrait mode. Like so:

Interestingly, it's not possible on Windows 10 either.

Are you new? It’s been like this, you are using it wrong.

haha, yes I'm aware I'm "using it wrong" but its finally dawned on me that i"m not the problem. iOS is the problem, so it is time to do something about it.

Funny, I've never used a Samsung device but this feature just makes sense for a tablet. I have no need for it on iPhone just because I'm happy to interact with one app at a time there.

Does Apple listens to all these suggestions ? It is like asking President Trump to change a legislation. Which common Man can do that ?? Anyways good looking for with your task ! By the way are you planning to write it directly to Timmy Boy ?? Or on whose email ?

Apple’s feedback page comes to mind...

I said I would contact apple.

https://www.apple.com/feedback/ipad.html

Done.
feels good

also for those who may be interested, Apple has a more recent documentation for developers.
https://developer.apple.com/design/...ines/ios/visual-design/adaptivity-and-layout/

Down under the "Multitasking Size Classes" section, the configurations are laid out clearly. same as back in iOS 9, bummer. Funny though, they left off the portrait orientation sample pictures... maybe because it is so FUGLY ... hmmm.

I really hope something is done about this. I'll report back if I hear anything from my Feedback submission.

ah well, it felt good a month ago to report this to Apple. Now, a month later with no reply it doesn't feel so good. I cannot believe Apple has left this feature for years looking so ugly and being so useless (in portrait). embarrassing!

Android's split screen (which is far more flexible than iOS's) works as the OP describes: top-bottom while on portrait mode, and left-right while on landscape mode.

Yeah I completely agree with the OP on portrait split-screen. Absolutely useless!

And it’s such a shame because holding the iPad in portrait is the best and most natural position.

hello again. A few months later now, I'm curious what iPadOS will do for portrait, specifically split-screen in portrait.

It was not encouraging to notice that there was precisely zero demo of the iPad in portrait during yesterday's WWDC keynote. Here's hoping that Apple have actually made some drastic portrait-mode improvements behind the scenes.
[doublepost=1559655553][/doublepost]anyone on the iPadOS developer beta care to try out portrait and report back here?

It isn't a bad idea and I would love the option to change to horizontal split instead of vertical only but to say it is useless is being harsh. Is there a reason you can't turn the iPad into landscape mode when doing split screen?

It’s a logical suggestion.

I never thought of it, since I rarely use the iPad in portrait, let alone multitask in portrait - I like to use singular Apps when in portrait, but I can see why the horizontal split would be much more useful.

hmmm. you are proving my point. If this feature looks so bad in portrait orientation that the solution is just to view it in landscape then something is clearly designed poorly. It would be one thing for Apple to say "this split-view only looks good in landscape. Lets disable it when the iPad is held in portrait." But see renders above on post #15. Some team at Apple actually approved and designed portrait split screen and it looks like poo for practically every use case.

The reason "you can't turn the iPad into landscape mode" is not what you can or can't do, its a matter of what would be the best use of screen space. There are endless examples, but the most obvious is viewing HD video + any other activity on the iPad. The ... oh nevermind, just go back and re- read this whole thread if you were actually asking me a question. Sorry feeling salty here, don't take it personally (well, unless you work for Apple, then FIX IT darnit!)
