Split screen

I have my Mail.App as full screen in Sierra. When I click a link, it goes into split screen with Safari. How do I turn that off? I just want it to open the link in the specified (Desktop 1) window that Safari should open everything in.

I find that it only does this when there is no Safari window open. If there is it will make a new tab in that window.

Yup. You seem to be right. I guess I'll just make sure I have a window up at all times. lol.
