splitting and merging iphoto libraries

Hi All

I'm not used to iphoto, I use photoshop... I am trying to do some management for my wife on her MBA 80GB....

what I'd like to do is have two or three iphoto libraries

one on her mac hd for 2010 images and two on an external HD - one with all images, one with all images not on mac hd

any ideas... I can split them okay by duplicating and deleting, but is there a way of merging them again....

I can't get iphoto to import from another iphoto library, and the help warns against looking inside the package to move images...

all help appreciated
