When I started the 24 thread this year I said up front that spoilers will happen in big red letters.

Which isn't going to be read by someone a few episodes down the road when the thread is innundated with posts. I'm not saying it isn't obvious that a TV show thread is going to have spoilers, but I do think if we put spoiler in the title of one thread it should be uniform for all similar threads.

But a movie is ultimately plot driven as well. You can talk overall/and non plot points only so long before the plot will come up. You could have the best effects/direction/acting/every other aspect but if there is not a compelling plot you won't get much discussion.

But you can talk about the plot in general ways without giving way the ending. You can say how each characters arc added to or detracted from the plot, how certain things didn't feel like they worked well, that the plot as a whole was tight/loose...the pacing needed work, etc.

There's also a difference between an evolving discussion of a movie that eventually ends up explaining, comparing, debating various plot developments and a thread that basically gives away the ending in the first post.

I don't see how adding it hurts anyone, so why not do it?

Can we at least come up with another word besides spoilers?

Think of milk or yogurt that hasn't been kept refrigerated.

Think of salmonella poisoning.

The word and its meaning makes me feel sick and nauseated every time I see it.

spoiled and spoilers is different.

The word reminds me of this story -

Only if we can get the rest of the English language to convert with us...

If a movie has been out for more then a year I think it is fair game.
Rubbish. People get to seeing movies in their own time. I just saw Casablanca for the first time last year. I'm catching up on some old Bond films too. Not everyone jumps to see new movies.

Tell me you're kidding. It's a word FFS! One with a meaning and a purpose.

What is the big deal about putting a warning that you're about to give away pivotal details of [whatever]? Have some courtesy.

(see, I didn't even use the word spoiler) :p

I hadn't heard of the film in question before.
I clicked on the thread as it looked like an interesting title.
I read the first post.
I now know what happens in the film.
The film looks good.
However, I probably now won't watch it.

I don't think you should be forced to put SPOILERS OMG!!!11 in the title, but it might be common courtesy to either do that, or put it in white text. If you let a door slam in someone's face, it's not illegal, but it's a civilised act to hold it open for them.

Exactly, what's the big deal about showing a bit of courtesy ?

Spoiler alerts are fair game. Even if dont put it in the thread title, would it be so hard to start a thread with a simple sentance ?
Warning! Please note this post/thread may contain details that could spoil your enjoyment of said material. Please bare that in mind.

Putting Spoiler in the tittle still wont help if you still click the first post and get the ending. I think people will get a false sense that the first few posts should be clean. Maybe say something like first post spoiler.

It happened and we're wiser all around. Hopefully we can get a spoiler type BBCode in the near future and all the spoilers posted from then on can be posted as such. Yes it ruined the movie for some but it was clearly unintentional. A spoiler warning would have been nice but clearly some of us (including myself) didn't think it was necessary and would have made a similar mistake. With spoiler BBCode the whole thread could be filled with spoilers and only those that cared to open them would...

For the time being though we can just agree (I hope) to put spoiler in thread titles so people will know to watch out for them but also that if it doesn't say spoiler, you may at least want to be wary of it.

And..... cheese monkey soda pop changing a unicycle tire in a blizzard.

No I'm not kidding, I really hate the damn word.

Pivotal Details works just fine for me though. ;)

Speaking of Pivotal Details, your avatar has been doing a lot of pivoting lately. :p

it's ok, I don't like the word phlegm. thankfully it doesn't come up much.

I suppose any way of warning people that there are details about to be revealed works. I just like having the option.

My 'tar has been changed. The dancing girls avatars have run their course for now but here you go, the latest one I used for posterity.

It's probably best that the tar disapear because all I do is stare at it and get nothing done.:p

Now that I think of it, I actually agree with the OP. If there is a topic discussing the movie, its not like we are going to leave out the cool parts, becasuse we dont want people to be "spoiled". It should be common knowledge that if you want to read into a thread discussing a movie or show, that spoilers are likely to be inside.

maybe but not in the first post of the thread. and if it is about to be "spoiled" it should include at least some warning that details are about to be revealed. this is not difficult or too much to ask. just a warning. I can't even believe this courtesy is even in question.

I'll quote Lau, who said it perfectly:

Jeez the 24 Thread would be practically a bunch of blank messages then.

Me: So in this episode (spoils) and that's what happens
MacNut: Really (spoils) I can't believe that (spoils)
Matt: (Spoils) I personally think that (spoils)

Catch my drift.

I think a Warning in the thread title should be sufficient. That spoils code seems to me like it would be over kill.
