I could play any song I wanted from the internet for free long before Spotify came around..

www.youtube.com

They are aimed at 2 different markets though. Youtube if more for video sharing and Spotify is for instant access to music. The layout and simplicity or Spotify shouldn't be overlooked. It has features that Youtube doesnt such as a radio feature where you can select a genre or year and then listen to random tracks from that particular year/genre. You can select your favourite tracks and queue them up and a track begins playing almost as fast as you can select play. No waiting for buffering here. Plus you can create playlists and save them for later listening

The way people think of music is changing. The new generation don't think of music as something you buy, it's just something you can download and listen to, therefore services like Spotify will be the future.

App Store

Spotify has now appeared in the UK app store. The Iphone or android version requires that you have a subscription (£9.99 a month) but if you just want a way to stream tunes to your mac there is no subscription required. Offline playlists can be made for the iphone so that they are synced to your phone. The tracks themselves are available in a bit-rate up to 320kbps

Just to add a little more information you now have the option to store tracks 'offline' on your mac as well as your iPhone. This means once synced to your computer there is no internet connection needed to play these tunes. This service is coming alone nicely

I'm not too keen on it. On iTunes I have all the music I own, all the rare music and stuff that simply isn't on Spotify. Also have a not great connection, so streaming would slow it down somewhat.

Never been much of a radio listener either.

Once again, Apple needs to be applauded for putting a music player on a memory stick and calling it the iPod that stirred a revolution which never ceases to amuse any adventurous innovations and many more to come....

There, fixed it for you!;). There were mp3 players before iPod, Apple just marketed the heck out of it.

Apple also did something different.

They made the whole experience user friendly and integrated. That is what sparked the revolution, as before then, MP3 players were not that popular.

And how long before spotify gets nuked by the copyright terrorists?

It won't.

Money from subscriptions/advertising is used to pay royalties to the copyright holders who have licensed their material onto Spotify. Thus making the whole thing legal! This is what the RIAA/record companies should have done (along with DRM free legal downloads) all along.

Most people are honest. The industry has slowly come around to this. Mainly thanks to firms like Apple and Spotify.

The more music that is made easily accessible, legal and affordable, the less pirating will go on.
