My other thought was to get an Android tablet, install Carplay APK on it, plug in the Carplay dongle, and use the tablet as a Carplay screen. It's the only choice for my motorcycle.

I tried the tablet thing but the experience was quite terrible however I used a Fire HD 8" and those things suck. I looked at the intellidash thing but it seemed very expensive and I thought that it used FM for audio and that's not what I'm looking for.

That's an excellent point.
As long as you have a car with blutooth or a USB, your smartphone is the device. And if your car doesn't have bluetooth or USB, you need to not buy Spotify equipment, not buy Spotfy or Apple Music, and start saving for the new car you're likely to need soon.
I’ve always thought that depending on the phone is what they’d do in order to produce a mass number of test devices. Once they got it nailed down, I figured the “production” systems would have their own connections, maybe the same as SiriusXM does, only the interface would be the box with dial and not your head unit.
