Spotify is officially coming to Apple Watch, as the streaming music service today delighted users with an early beta version of the watchOS app through TestFlight. There is no timeframe for a public release yet.

A few Reddit users participating in Spotify's public beta testing program have shared screenshots of the app's icon, playback controls, and recently played list with a toggle for shuffle mode.

According to one Reddit user, offline downloads are currently not supported, but the feature could be added later of course. The user also says the app has yet to be optimized for 40mm and 44mm sized Apple Watch Series 4 models, but that's also something that could be taken care of during the beta testing period.

An official Spotify for Apple Watch has been long awaited, especially after third-party app Spotty was discontinued.

Update: In a statement provided to MacRumors, a Spotify spokesperson said "we're always testing new products and experiences, but have no further news to share at this time."

Oh?! I personally don't use Spotify but I know a lot of people do and this is nothing but great news I'd imagine.

If they do add offline download support, then this is a game changer. I'd trade Spotify's interface for Apple Music when hell freezes over, so this means that I may finally be able to go out on runs without needing to carry a phone. Well done to the Spotify team!

Good news, especially if Spotify will eventually allow users to store tracks on the watch itself. I have over 3gb of space on my watch just waiting to be used.

I've been using Apple Music since it's release but I'd ditch it in a heartbeat if it means I use Spotify on my Apple Watch. I use Windows and iTunes is just so bad to use and clunky.

This won't happen until Apple allows third parties to use Streaming (My understanding is it's currently tied down to Apple only Apps)
This is what's killing the Watch for me now.

I just got an S4 LTE and am very limited in what I can do without my phone nearby and connected. The main reason I got the LTE was to not have to bring my phone when I go for a run or bike ride, but without the phone only Apple's workout app can utilize GPS and data, and it's far from my top choice of app. So I still have to bring my phone with me, and I get to pay $10/month for the privilege.

Steaming only, no downloads yet

Without phone?

Question being, is this a 'remote' or fully fledged client?

According to The Verge it only controls Playback at the moment

Beta testers of the Spotify iOS app have started gaining access to the app, and the first version appears to be limited to just controlling playback for now
