Spotify is at the mercy of whichever WatchOS APIs Apple makes available for 3rd party developers, just like everyone else. Apple would rather wow with new watch faces (sorry, no 3rd party ones) than really open up their OS. It has been this way for iOS for years.

If there's one thing I have learned with Apple products, it's don't buy an Apple product based on its potential, because its potential is often unrealized before its time to buy a replacement. Buy it based on what it does at the time of purchase.

Good advice. WatchOS API has allowed apps to store content though so we should be able to sync Spotify Playlists to the watch for playback. Just no streaming.

Wait, you mean I'll be able to control Spotify from my watch rather than have dig into my pocket for the phone? This is well overdue for long walks.

Much, much too late for me, I've already transitioned to Apple Music with the Homepod, Watch, and Siri integration. I much preferred the playlists, sharing, auto-discovery, and interface of) Spotify, but without deep integration the value prop is much lower. Funny thing is, I'm on a family plan with Spotify so I still have 100% access, just never use it since I can't ask Siri to play something.

this will bring over a lot of android users.
Once they allow Siri to play songs on Spotify, that's when I imagine a lot more Android users will switch. Even then, that's not enough reason to switch as it's a 3rd party service. Spotify being available on the Apple watch, another device someone would have buy, isn't enough reason to switch.

At laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaast, add a feature so we can download and keep an offline (or online) playlist and I'll get an Apple watch asap.

I currently have Apple Music and Spotify through a family account. I would like to cut down to 1 service but it seems impossible to do so.

I prefer the library , tagging and iCloud functionality and it works super on my iPad an iPhone. But whenever I am on my Windows PC, LG TV, Chromecast or PlayStation I have to use Spotify and add the songs later to Apple Music.

I can forgive not being on every device but Windows has a very big marketshare. With every Apple-event I always hope they announce the death of iTunes and a new lightweight Music app for Windows or a fully functional webplayer like every other streaming service out there.

With Windows and webapplications having such high usage number it is very surprising they force paying customers in such a piss poor laggy experience as iTunes and leave the development for a decent webplayer for reddit enthousiasts.

This must explain why all my IT-colleagues at work stream music through their phones instead of their PC...which is a bit stupid IMO

Too little too late, I’m afraid. I waited long for this for primarily one feature: offline playback of my run list while out running without my phone.

They have had a long time and that single feature doesn’t even look like it’s going to be part of the app.

Enjoyed my time with Spotify, but haven’t looked back since switching to Apple Music. That delivers everything including LTE streaming. Simply amazing

If they do add offline download support, then this is a game changer. I'd trade Spotify's interface for Apple Music when hell freezes over, so this means that I may finally be able to go out on runs without needing to carry a phone. Well done to the Spotify team!

Interesting as critical as I am of Apple these days I'm one of the few that prefers AM. Mostly because of all the work I've done rating music in itunes over the years. That and the fact that I'm all about making my own playlist and smart playlist as far as I know only exist on AM vs other subscription services.

If Spotify had smart playlist and star ratings I'd be more interested in switching.

Well I guess they finally realized that people really did want this and were willing enough to leave for AM. Snowy.Rocks is finally getting released after Spotify tried to kill it. Too late IMO. Sticking w/ Apple Music.

There was a 3rd party watch app that was on the verge of release a while back. Spotify bought it and killed it. Hired the dev, had him sign a non-disclosure, made him stop talking about the app completely, then shelved it.

You can use a Mighty which is small, phone-free and can play offline Spotify. Perfect for running or phone-free gym workouts.

Just a happy user - I am not affiliated with the company.

i assumed that after they acquired the app/company that built the 'snowy' prototype, they would have buried it. very cool.

They did try though. It's been a year and a half and that app was nearly ready for release. I think Spotify just realized that they messed up and enough people left for AM. They caved out of need to retain customers.

I've been wanting to buy an Apple Watch and AirPods for a while now but I've been waiting for Spotify to be supported first. As a runner, this news is really exciting! I'm very tempted to go buy both tomorrow. However, I'm hoping updated AirPods are released soon so I'm going to hold off for a while longer. Hopefully by then, I'll be able to download Spotify playlists directly onto the watch.

This is what's killing the Watch for me now.

I just got an S4 LTE and am very limited in what I can do without my phone nearby and connected. The main reason I got the LTE was to not have to bring my phone when I go for a run or bike ride, but without the phone only Apple's workout app can utilize GPS and data, and it's far from my top choice of app. So I still have to bring my phone with me, and I get to pay $10/month for the privilege.

I have used the Apple Watch for running since my S2 without my phone (just saved playlists on the watch for offline playback) - loads of apps can use data and GPS without issues. I just still prefer the Apple build in one actually - but it could use improvements no doubt
