How much does this have to do with the millions of people on Android devices who want nothing to do with Apple and Apple Music?
Does Spotify become the default or is it simply a better service?
I have neither so, I have no clue.

I'm iOS but subcribe to Google Play Music, Google have strangely never released their subcriber figures, bit of a dark horse.
I'd hazard a guess that they have a strong subcriber base on android as the app is default.
Its not a two horse race.

This is generally because of the record companies. They only allow their music to be distributed to certain countries depending on the agreement.

Don't you think Spotify and others would open themselves up to making more money by adding additional countries if they could? "Nah, we've got enough money. Let's limit our service and not make any more cash.
Well, Apple Music, Google Music are available. It's not that they are exclusives. Even Netflix is available so, I already get your side of the argument.

All my friends on android stay there because they can get everything illegally.

Can't speak for all android users but in my experience, that's why people go that route, I would guess the numbers behind the paid music service would be pretty weak.

As it prepares to go public, Spotify has reached 60 million paid subscribers, reports TechCrunch. The 60 million mark comes nearly five months after the company announced its 50 million paid subscriber milestone in March.

When adding in customers who listen to the free ad-supported tier, Spotify has more than 140 million subscribers worldwide. Comparatively, Apple Music now boasts 27 million paying subscribers, a number Apple shared at its Worldwide Developers Conference in June.

Since its 2015 debut, Apple Music has been growing steadily by luring customers with exclusive album releases, concerts, and original television programming, but it does not offer a free tier like Spotify. Apple Music subscriptions start at $9.99 per month after a three-month free trial.

Spotify paid subscriptions are also priced at $9.99 per month, and in 2016, Spotify's revenue grew over 50 percent to $3.3 billion.

In the near future, Spotify plans to go public through a direct listing, forgoing the traditional initial public offering and making existing Spotify shares available to the public. With this method, likened to an elopement instead of a full-on wedding, Spotify avoids the fanfare of an IPO and does not have to hire an underwriter. Spotify is expected to initiate its direct listing in 2018.

And ! So , I like Spple music does all that's req that says it all Ford Vauxhall each down to there own preferences

Tested spotify, google music and apple music: conclusion - apple music is way, way (... ∞ times) better.

Welcome to MacRumors!
If you're UK based you should never pay more than £8.50 for Apple Music as there are often 15% off iTunes vouchers available.

i had apple family subscription for everything, but things get complicated if you move to new European country. I was so frustrated I cancelled everything. Apple have to do something about sharing services, add more possibilities. Streaming is the future, but on my own terms, I decide when what and how.

Long time Spotify user here and won't be leaving for Apple Music as my network carrier offers free streaming with Spotify even at the highest bitrate. Not sure if any carrier in Australia offers free streaming of Apple Music, I know one that gives their users a free 6 month trial with Apple Music.

I just got Spotify and it's awesome. Very intuitive interface and such a wide variety of music.
I don't get all of these Apple fanatics hating on Spotify... Have you not used it? Apple has fallen off..... thoroughly. It's easy to tell for someone that doesn't blindly follow a company that's lost its way.

I really hope Apple allow Spotify on the HomePod. If they don't, I'll wait for the rumored higher-end Echo.

I too question the 60M, is that 100% Live customers?
I subcribed 10 years ago and cancelled, is that part of the 60M? are they are including 'churn'.

If they announced this along with plans for going public then I doubt there's any funny accounting going on with the numbers. Every figure they put out will be heavily scrutinized and fact checked once they go public... Wouldn't be too smart to start off on the wrong foot in that department.

I really like Amazon Music Unlimited, doing the free trial. I have an Apple Music family plan. I don’t use the playlists or ‘musicology’ as I just search for albums I’d like to hear but 95% of the time I listen to Music I own. I mostly listen to classical music.
I just wish that Apple would ask me what I'm interested in and then hide everything else from me.

Spotify is a great service but I like to keep things old school. Too much choice and I spend more time browsing and browsing instead of listening. I also like to own music both on CD and on my hard drives. I don't like the idea of perpetually paying for services with the exception of Netflix which is a bargain with their original content, foreign movies and shows and great library of classic movies and tv shows.

Your personal preferences and priorities call Netflix a bargain. My particular preferences and priorities call AM a bargain -- especially with regard to the very large library that AM allows (and that Spotify does not). I listen to my 40,000 tracks one album at a time, but boy, is it nice to shuffle through all those pre-selected tracks when I'm not sure what I want to listen to. But then, I am 68 years old, and I've had way more than enough of "old school" during those years. It is not particularly pleasant to wait 3 weeks for an LP to arrive like I had to back in the 60's.

It's summer and the kids are bored...

I switched (still have both, but use Spotify more) from Google Play to Spotify. I prefer the playlists, the interface is great and it has client software and interfaces for all my devices (iPhone, Android, PC, Sonos, etc.). Apple manages to botch the usability of practically anything they touch, starting with iTunes.
