Spotify is increasing its Premium plan to $10.99 per month, up from $9.99, the company has announced. The price hike applies to users in the United States, the United Kingdom, the European Union, and several other regions and territories.

"So that we can keep innovating, we are changing our Premium prices across a number of markets around the world," the company said in a post announcing the changes. "These updates will help us continue to deliver value to fans and artists on our platform."

In addition to increasing the Premium subscription price, the cost of the Duo plan is set to increase from $12.99 to $14.99, the Family plan will increase from $15.99 to $16.99, and the Student plan will increase from $4.99 to $5.99.

Spotify said existing subscribers in affected markets would receive an email explaining what this means for their account. Existing subscribers will get a one month grace period before the new pricing takes effect, according to a company FAQ.

The price increases aren't all that surprising given the recent subscription hikes of rival music streaming services. Apple Music prices increased in October, increasing for individuals by $1 a month to $10.99, or by $10 for the annual plan, which costs $109 a year. Apple Music for families also went up by $2 a month to $16.99. Apple raised the price of ‌Apple Music‌ due to increased licensing costs that provide more money to artists and songwriters, the company said at the time.

More recently, Amazon Music and YouTube Music Premium have also increased their prices, in both cases by adding $1 to their individual standard monthly subscription plans, which now stand at $10.99.

The Spotify price increases will be applied to the following countries: Andorra, Albania, Argentina, Austria, Australia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Belgium, Bulgaria, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cyprus, Denmark, Ecuador, Estonia, Spain, Finland, France, United Kingdom, Greece, Guatemala, Hong Kong, Croatia, Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Iceland, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Latvia, Monaco, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Malta, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, New Zealand, Peru, Portugal, Serbia, Sweden, Singapore, Slovenia, Slovakia, San Marino, Thailand, Türkiye, United States, Kosovo.

Inevitable really. Still on the fence between Spotify and Apple Music. Apple Music fits into the ecosystem much better and offers Atmos / lossless / HiRes, but the Spotify algorithm is just so much better at suggesting songs I might like.

I agree. I like to listen to new music often and Spotify is quite a bit better an offering up unique playlists. If Apple Music ever got this right, I would jump back in a heartbeat.

Spotify could charge $50 a month and I'd still use it over garbage Apple Music. That app never optimizes, so I had to constantly re-open it to get it to connect to anything and the shuffle is complete trash. Just to name a couple of issues with it. It gets stuck in these 50-100 song shuffle loops. Apple Music is about as useful as Siri is to me. Also, most of the people who mention lossless are probably listening to Apple Music in lossless mode via Bluetooth on Beats gear or some trash "Hi-Fi" system at home filled with Polk speakers in 3.1 surround, a Sony AVR, and HomePods while screaming "LOOOSSSSLESSSS" and pounding their chests like Kong. 🤣

The Spotify app is vastly better than AM’s offering (Spotify Connect alone in enviable), but AM wins on most other fronts (price, music quality, etc) so I’ll put up with Apple’s second class app experience. As for the price hike, it was bound to happen. Everything is going up.

As much as I preferred the UI of Spotify and the weekly discover was pretty good I switched to Apple Music 2 years ago since there were actual changes being made like lossless and a few other features of course lossless being a big one especially considering Spotify has been saying they will for how many years now

Still a bargain. Close to 100% of all contemporary music for $11 vs services like Netflix where you pay up to $20 for an extremely small slice of the overall movies/TV content available.
Not a Spotify fan. Apple Music. Plus to me Netflix at $20 is still a bargain giving how many shows we watch.

Pay the same for less

I've had Apple Music since 2015, they offered a higher bit rate before Spotify and the others followed suit; although Tidal pushed everyone down the hill on that one. Apple only charges one price, so you get the best file format available and you'll get iCloud Music Library for your local files. I still buy my music on CD or vinyl, then rips the files into my library for matching. I used iTunes Match for years, but there are bands/artists I'll never buy their tunes, so streaming is a better option for listening to those songs a few times.
