Following over a year of testing in select countries, Spotify is debuting a new subscription plan called Premium Duo, which costs $12.99 a month and allows two people who live under the same roof to share the one plan while owning separate Spotify accounts.

Duo costs $3 more than a single Premium membership, and given the new plan is aimed at couples and roommates, both users must live at the same address. Spotify requires a confirmation of address during the sign-up process, and the bill for the plan is sent to the person who sets up and purchases the Premium Duo account.

Premium Duo comes with an exclusive playlist called "Duo Mix," which Spotify regularly updates based on music that each user on the plan listens to and likes.

Duo Mix includes two versions: "Calm" for more mellow tracks and "Upbeat" for songs with a faster tempo. Additionally, the two members on Premium Duo are able to create playlists and share them with each other via a Shared Playlists feature.

Existing solo Premium members can upgrade to Premium Duo at any time without losing their existing account listening history or preferences. It's worth noting that a Family plan membership is only $2 more than Duo and supports up to six accounts. For more information on Premium Duo, head to the Spotify website.

How can they possibly confirm a physical address for so many people??
They cannot, they will just ask you the enter the same address. Probably they use this to get discounts on their licensing agreements.

At least on Android they used to track via GPS where you are and if u were never remotely close to the address the owner gave, they blocked access. Not sure if that was a beta test and if they are still doing that though

A lot of Spotify movement over the last week. Can we hope for offline Watch playback soon??

Address checking is stupid. So if my partner and I don't live under the same roof, we wouldn't qualify? What if we're long distance or someone is frequently on the road for work? Seems like they're trying to comment on how a typical couple should operate, but we all know they come in different shapes in sizes.

I think it's more to do with their licensing deals rather than them imposing what they "think" a couple should be

If you're in a long distance relationship then you're not a couple in this sense.

If one of you is on the road a lot then where's the issue? You both share the same legal abode, right?

Never get people complaining because they want their situation covered under a term. What's next, 6 adults living all over the country wanting a family plan because they are all related?

That doesn't make any sense. So according to you, you cannot use the service unless you have been at the address you provided? hahaha. Essentially all that is required to sign up under this plan is to have visited the place at least once.

Spotify's address checking is very basic for the family plan - anyone who gets added to the plan just has to type the same address in as the account owner. I would assume this works the same way.

Just put the same address down, it doesn't matter if it's actually your correct address.

thats not what I said

for example my cousin (Mexican) has a Mexican family plan but his cousin lives in San Diego. She would get a push notification asking her to login near location XY (gps) to confirm and keep using the service. At the same time it offered her the single plan as an alternative

My bad, I have edited my response.

Unless they both like listening to music at the same time. For me and my wife, a $2/month upgrade to both be able to not have to constantly toggle between offline mode is worth it.

I hadn't even thought about toggling offline mode to get around the one listener at a time restriction.
