that took a long time to come .... I would have scrapped Spotify long ago - if it weren't for my HEOS speakers and amplifiers.

So unfortunately I pay for Spotify *and* Apple Music (via Apple One) - sucks, but that is the way it is.

Spotify's Apple Watch app is total garbage - it frequently fails to play downloaded playlists.

Spotify couldn't be clearer that they're trying to punish Apple users with a suite of dodgy user experiences.

The fact they kicked off over no third-party Homepod access and now that it's available won't develop a third-party integration is hard proof that they're a bad faith actor.
I go running with mine all the time without my phone and the app works perfectly

Wha... I have never before even considered the possibility of connecting headphones to a watch.

Maybe I'm not ready for this bold new future.
Bluetooth is a wondrous technology when it works. You can listen to music on the watch while shooting video on the phone, which is important in my case. Or go for a run without the phone even with a wifi only watch.

Mine is fairly inconsistent as others have reported here too:

I had hoped to play music online without download (mine has cellular), but I gave up on that because it rarely worked. So I made a few specific list that I download to the watch. Sometimes it will play downloaded music perfectly well for the entire run. Sometimes it will get into a loop where it can only play the same 2 songs until I quit the app and restart it. Sometimes it will then actually jump to playing some offline music - so cellular playback suddenly works!

I hope this version makes it possible to reliably play back non-downloaded content again.

I can select my powerbeats but it’s actually routed through the phone. Even when i’m playing a playlist that I specifically downloaded to my watch, Spotify requires the web connection from my phone. It also stops playing music every time I start shooting video on the phone. If I cut mobile data on my phone, Spotify just shows an error message. No such issues with Apple Music. I don’t have a subscription but I can play music I’ve bought on iTunes and downloaded to my watch. I don’t even need to have the phone with me.

Of course, this is the wifi only version of the Apple Watch.
Interesting. I’m on watchOS 8.7 (series7 WiFi) and I can effectively use my watch as a remote for Spotify - i can choose the either the watch itself, my phone or my laptop as the playback device. And if I select the watch it then requests for me to choose which of my AirPods to connect to.
Downloaded playlists also work fine, although it was really buggy getting them to work for months after I bought the thing and even now, it still might require a couple of attempts. I definitely don’t need the phone nearby to listen to music.

i feel your frustration though. The app could be much improved.

how about being able to search for a song that isn't in a playlist? until then, virtually useless app

Cool, maybe it’s supposed to work and just doesn’t for me 🤷‍♂️
Maybe, it was a little stupid to it all right. The most annoying thing for me is that your "liked" songs aren't a "playlist" and therefore can't be sent to the watch, apparently you need to make a playlist called liked songs and then manually copy / sync them. That seems like an easy fix.

Is there anyone received this update? I think I haven’t received it for my Series 8.
