Spotify today rolled out a new feature that lets its Premium users hide songs that they don't want to hear within a playlist. Spotify said this feature is rolling out to users on both the iOS and Android versions of the app (via The Verge).

With the new feature, Premium subscribers can go into any playlist on Spotify, select a song, and choose "hide song" from the context menu. Afterwards, when listening through the playlist, the hidden song will always be automatically skipped.

If you change your mind, you can un-hide songs as well. Spotify is hoping that this small update lets subscribers slightly customize its curated playlists, which can sometimes still offer tracks that they dislike.

Spotify has been rolling out a few updates over the past few weeks. Most recently it began supporting Siri voice controls on the Apple Watch, and last month it introduced a new home screen UI meant to guide users to their favorite content with more ease.

I generally love my curated playlists, but I'm looking forward to the day I can do the same on Apple Music.

Perhaps Apple will follow suit. I like the idea of curated playlists, as they help me discover music outside of my normal ruts. That said, there are stinker tracks on them from time-to-time. Sometimes I wonder if these "curators" actually listen to a track all the way through or just figure because there is a piano on the album art it must be classical piano music. Every music service has its stinkers. In the old days you just got up and changed the station, lol.

Funny. On my iPhone, none of my Playlists ever have songs I don’t want to listen to. I only put songs on there that I want on that playlist. I thought that was the point.

i follow a lot of playlist by others or Spotify itself but often there are songs on it I don’t like

edit: Now that I think about it i actually don’t have a single playlist I made myself

I wish my Apple Music would actually feature at least one song I'd like to hold on to in the New Music playlist each week, but this seldom happens. Sure, it does feature artists I listen to, but the songs are usually not my cup of tea.

I've recently switched to Spotify from Apple Music and am pretty happy with it. Spotify seems a little farther ahead with the features and polish with exception for lyrics, which I'm sure will come. I find Spotify does a much better job at suggesting new artists, plus they have a "duo plan" for me and my wife which is cheaper than Apple's family plan. I'm glad Spotify now has Siri integration otherwise I wouldn't have switched.

Can’t wait for the day Apple Music won’t play coldplay at all on curated playlists and skips them on radio lists.

It's more of a feature for the published playlists.. not your own. Even though that could be useful in some instances

I was also wondering about this when I read the story.

Who puts songs that they don't like in their playlist ?

That makes more sense although I don't think it's actually a playlist in this context.

I've tried Spotify but mainly use it for their radio stations. They repeat songs way too often and even play songs that I selected thumbs down on previously.

Whenever I see Spotify mentioned on MacRumors my immediate thought is "Please be native HomePod support."

Not going back to Spotify until they offer lossless compression. Their tracks sound so flat. Using Tidal and good-old-fashioned CDs right now.

Have you selected the high quality setting available to premium users?
i can’t say I have noticed any problem in the sound quality. (I am a musician)

I use Spotify. But i wouldn't find this as useful as the feature you get with Apple music. Which is to simply tell SIRI you do not like the song. And it will not play that song anymore.

There are some features I REALLY miss about Spotify since switching to Apple Music, and playlist manipulation is one of them. Honestly, though, the one big, huge, looming feature that drives me insane every time I think about it and was the hardest for me to transition away from was searching within playlists. The only real benefit it provides is starting a playlist from a specific song, but it makes a huge difference. Instead, I have to hit "Shuffle" to start playing it, pause the current song, go to general search, add the song I want to up next, and then skip the current song and play. It would also be nice to quickly check if a song is on a playlist, or which songs by a certain artist are on a playlist. Such a silly feature to not have.
